Blue Hen Men Enjoy Best Team Finish (14th)
Since 1993; Weisser Earns All-East Honors

 

PITTSBURGH, PA -- The University of Delaware women's swimming and diving team enjoyed its highest finish ever in fourth place and Blue Hen men were 14th for their best finish in almost a decade at the Eastern College Athletic Conference Championships this past weekend at the University of Pittsburgh.

UMBC captured the men's team title with 670.5 points while host University of Pittsburgh was the women's team winner with 629.5 points. A total of 30 men's teams and 31 women's teams competed in the three-day event which featured the top teams in the East. The UD men had their best finish since placing 12th in 1992-93.

The Delaware women had 10 All-East finishes by placing among the top eight in a race. Sophomore Meghan Petry (Villa Walsh/New Providence, NJ), the defending 1,650 freestyle champion, led the way for the Blue Hens with a second place finish in that event Saturday (17:20.05). Also placing second for the UD women was the 200 medley relay team of Kristen Avioli (Bishop Shanahan/West Chester, PA), Sandy Stephens (St. Mark's/Wilmington, DE), Sara Stephens (St. Mark's/Wilmington, DE), and Jenna Blongiewicz (Andover, MA HS) which swam to a time of 1:48.28. Sara Stephens earned All-East honors in five events while Blongiewicz claimed four and Sandy Stephens had three.

The Delaware men were led by junior Kevin Weisser (Franklin Regional/Murrysville, PA) who had two All-East finishes by placing fourth in the 1,650 freestyle (16:27.02) and eighth in the 200 freestyle (1:44.67). He became Delaware's first male swimmer to earn All-East honors since Tom Maday placed fourth in the 100 breaststroke in 2000.

Other All-East performances for the UD women included the 200 freestyle relay team of Sara Stephens, Andrea Rossi (Muhlenberg/Reading, PA), Jill Fitzgerald (Archbishop Wood/Warminster, PA), and Blongiewicz placing third with a school record time of 1:37.88, Sara Stephens was fourth in the 100 butterfly (57.44), the 400 medley relay team of Avioli, Sandy Stephens, Sara Stephens, and Blongiewicz was fourth (3:56.55), Kim Fields (Severna Park, MD HS) was fifth in the 1,650 freestyle (17:36.54), the 800 freestyle relay team of Blongiewicz, Kathryn Fryer (Severna Park, MD HS), Fitzgerald, and Jennifer Haus (St. Mark's/Newark, DE) was sixth in 7:48.62, Haus was sixth in the 200 freestyle (1:55.46), Sara Stephens was seventh in the 200 butterfly (2:06.71), and Sandy Stephens was eighth in the 100 breaststroke (1:07.00).

Other top finishes for the men saw Weisser place ninth in the 500 freestyle (4:43.30), Robert Frey (East/West Chester, PA) place 12th in the 400 individual medley (4:13.03), the 800 freestyle relay team of Bryan Kahner (Jericho, NY HS), Nick Grossman (Daniel/Clemson, SC), Alex Skacel (Holy Cross/Moorestown, NJ), and Weisser placed 13th in 7:12.81, and the 400 medley relay team of Skacel, Frey, Kahner, and Weisser placed 14th in 3:37.04
