Delaware Men Place Second Behind Lehigh

 

NEWARK, DE -- The University of Delaware women's swimming and diving team won its second straight title and the Delaware men placed second at the Delaware Invitational Saturday at the Harry Rawstrom Natatorium.

The Blue Hen women won 11 events to finish with 1,180 total points, outdistancing Lehigh (1,082) and LaSalle (778) in the annual three-team event. On the men's side, Lehigh was the winner for the second straight year with 1,207 points to outdistance Delaware (933) and LaSalle e(922.5). The Delaware men captured three first place finishes.

Freshman Sara Stephens (St. Mark's/Newark, De) had a hand in five first place finishes for the Blue Hens while sister sophomore Sandy Stephens (St. Mark's/Newark,DE) won four events, freshman Andrea Rossi (Muhlenberg/Reading, PA) won three events, and freshman Kristen Avioli (Bishop Shanahan/West Chester, PA), sophomore Jill Fitzgerald (Wood/Warminster, PA) and junior Julie Van Deusen (Hill School/Bear, DE) each won two events, including setting a school record in the three-meter dive. Also winning a solo event was senior Jennifer Haus (St. Mark's/Newark, DE). Deusen is undefeated in both diving events this season.

Sara Stephens won the 100 butterfly (58.82) and 200 individual medley (2:12.18) and had a hand in the winning 200 medley relay (1:50.31), 200 freestyle relay (1:40.04), and 400 medley relay (4:00.96); Avioli won the 200 medley relay, 400 medley relay, and 200 freestyle relay; Sandy Stephens won the 100 breaststroke (1:07.36), 200 breaststroke (2:26.30), 200 medley relay, and 400 medley relay; Rossi won the 200 medley relay and 400 medley relay; Fitzgerald won the 100 freestyle (54.57) and 200 freestyle relay; and Van Deusen won the one-meter (259.75) and three-meter (480.05) events.

Haus won the 200 freestyle in 1:58.79. Avioli was also second in the 100 backstroke (1:01.21) and 400 freestyle relay (3:41.28) while Haus was second in the 400 freestyle and 800 freestyle relays; Fitzgerald was second in the 400 and 800 freestyle relays; Sara Stephens was second in the 400 freestyle relay; and Sandy Stephens was second in the 200 individual medley (2:12.28).

For the Delaware men, junior Tim Wasiewski (Conestoga Valley/Lancaster, PA) won both the 100 breaststroke (1:01.05) and 200 breaststroke (2:15.18) events and was second in the 200 individual medley (2:01.58) while freshman Robert Frey (East/West Chester, PA) was the winner in that 200 individual medley (2:00.71) event.

Also for the Delaware women, Meghan Petry (Villa Walsh/New Providence, NJ) was second in the 1,650 freestyle (17:33.58) and 800 freestyle relay; Jenna Blongiewicz (Andover, MA HS) was second in the 800 freestyle relay and 200 backstroke (2:12.71); and Rebecca Caldwell (McCaskey/Lancaster, PA) was second in the 200 breaststroke (2:29.53).

Also for the Delaware men, Bryan Kahner (Jericho, NY HS) was second in the 1,650 freestyle (17:03.92) and 500 freestyle (4:49.83); Lavar Larks (Mt. Pleasant/Wilmington, DE) was second in the one-meter dive (262.35); and Rick Dressel (McKean/Wilmington, DE) was second in the 100 butterfly (53.22).
