Blue Hens Earn
First Points of Meet in 800 Freestyle
Relay
PITTSBURGH, PA -- University of
Delaware women swimmers picked up three more All-East
citations Saturday night at the second day of the Eastern
College Athletic Conference Men's and Women's Swimming and
Diving Championships at the University of
Pittsburgh.
Sandy Stephens (St.
Mark's/Wilmington, DE) placed fourth in the 100 breaststroke
and swam a leg of the fourth place 800 freestyle relay and
Sarah Peffer (Newark/Newark, DE) placed sixth in the
400 individual medley to up the Blue Hens' All-East count to
six. The Blue Hen women currently stand in eighth place in
the 29-team standings with 145 points, tied with Penn State.
Boston College holds the team lead with 312 points followed
by New Hampshire (271) and UMBC (215).
The Delaware men picked up its first
points of the meet with a 15th place finish in the 800
freestyle relay and have four points to tie for 27th in the
30-team field. UMBC leads with 384 points. The third and
final day of the championships was Sunday.
Stephens upped her All-East count to four
in the meet Saturday as she placed fourth in the 100
breaststroke (1:05.51) then teamed with Jill
Fitzgerald (Wood/Warminster, PA), Peffer, and Meghan
Petry (Villa Walsh/New Providence, NJ) for a fourth
place finish in a school record time of 7:43.61. Peffer
earned her second individual All-East performance by placing
sixth in the 400 individual medley in 4:30.84. She captured
the Colonial Athletic Association title in that event last
week at George Mason.
Also for the Blue Hen women, Krysta
Wasiewski (Conestoga Valley/Lancaster, PA) was 15th in
the 100 backstroke (1:01.19), Kristen Avioli (Bishop
Shanahan/West Chester, PA) was 16th in the 100 backstroke
(1:01.89), Fitzgerald was 12th in the 200 freestyle
(1:55.45), Petry was 20th in the 400 individual medley
(4:44.41), and the 200 medley relay team of Avioli,
Stephens, Peffer, and Fitzgerald was 10th in
1:50.64.
On the men's side, Delaware posted its
highest finish of the meet with a 15th place position in the
800 freestyle relay as the team of Kevin Kotowski
(Salesianum/Wilmington, DE), Kevin Weisser (Franklin
Regional/Murrysville, PA), Tim Wasiewski (Conestoga
Valley/Lancaster, PA), and Nick Grossman
(Daniel/Clemson, SC) raced to a time of 7:12.17.
Also for the UD men, Bob Frey
(East/West Chester, PA) was 21st in the 400 individual
medley (4:18.44), Alex Skacel (Holy Cross/Moorestown,
NJ) was 22nd in the 100 backstroke (55.14) and 46th in the
100 butterfly (54.29), Weisser was 27th in the 200 freestyle
(1:46.16), Adam Goldstein (Vernon Twp./Highland
Lakes, NJ) was 28th in the 400 individual medley (4:24.88),
Kotowski was 37th in the 200 freestyle (1:48.16), Grossman
was 41st in the 200 freestyle (1:49.09), Wasiewski was 42nd
in the 100 breaststroke (1:01.19), and David Hardy
(DeMatha/Mt. Ranier, MD) was 47th in the 100 breaststroke
(1:02.22).
