Blomberg Wins Two Events But Blue Hens Fall Twice At Old Dominion Tri-Meet

NORFOLK, VA -- The University of Delaware women's swimming team split two results while the men fell twice at a tri-meet at Old Dominion with William & Mary Friday and Saturday.

The Blue Hen women (2-2, 1-2 CAA) narrowly defeated the host Monarchs, 167-164, but fell to the Tribe, 211.5-124.5, in a pair of Colonial Athletic Association results, while the UD men (1-3, 0-3 CAA) dropped a 240-94 decision to Old Dominion and lost to William & Mary, 215-109.

The women were led by senior Sara Stephens (Wilmington, DE/St. Mark's), who won the 200 butterfly in 2:07.61, the 100 butterfly in 57.58, and the 200 individual medley in 2:11.89. Stephens also teamed with freshman Ellen Heinz (West Chester, PA/Henderson), junior Sara Reed (East Greenwich, RI/West Chester East-PA), and sophomore Kendall Warren (Downington, PA/Downingtown) as the Blue Hens' 200 freestyle relay team finished second in 1:41.72.

Sophomore Meredith Law (Chesapeake, VA/Nansemond-Suffolk Academy) finished second in the 500 freestyle in 5:11.69, and was third in both the 1650 freestyle in 17:58.97 and the 400 individual medley in 4:45.95. Senior Kim Fields (Severna Park, MD/Severna Park) placed second in the 1650 freestyle in 17:52.53, while Heinz picked up Delaware's other second place finish by swimming the 100 freestyle in 55.09.

Reed was third in both the 200 freestyle in 1:57.60 and the 200 backstroke in 2:12.41, while Kristen Avioli (West Chester, PA/Bishop Shanahan) also finished third in the 100 backstroke in 1:01.42. The Blue Hen 200 medley relay team of Avioli, sophomore Miranda Conrad (Enola, PA/East Pennsboro), Stephens, and Reed was third in its race in 1:55.55, while sophomore Sarah Bergan (Bethesda, MD/Bethesda-Chevy Chase) led the Blue Hen divers by finishing third in both the 3-meter diving with 179.35 points and the 1-meter diving with 188.45 points.

The Delaware men were paced by freshman Adam Blomberg (Kennewick, WA/Kamiakin), who won the 200 freestyle in 1:45.47 and the 500 freestyle 4:47.62, and finished third in the 200 butterfly in 1:59.55. Sophomore Joe Virion (Wilmington, DE/Concord) was second in the 1650 freestyle in 16:53.76 and third in the 500 freestyle in 4:54.07, while sophomore Brendan Spencer (Arlington, VA/Yorktown) finished second in the 100 backstroke in 55.91 and fourth in the 200 backstroke in 2:02.92.

The Blue Hen 200 freestyle relay team of freshman Andrew Zinn (Wilmington, DE/McKean), junior Levan Beridze (Tbilisi, Georgia/Princeton-NJ), freshman Roger Carman (Wheaton, Md/Albert Einstein), and Blomberg placed third in its race in 1:29.72, while the 400 freestyle relay team of Beridze, Zinn, sophomore Max Evers (Wilmington, DE/McKean) and Blomberg was also third in 3:16.27.

Freshman Jeff Falini (Bear, DE/Salesianum) finished fourth in both the 1-meter diving with 172.10 points and the 3-meter diving with 163.65 points, while sophomore Cory Sanderson (Kensington, MD/Albert Einstein) was also fourth in the 400 individual medley in 4:24.41.

The Old Dominion men (5-0, 3-0 CAA) defeated William & Mary (2-4, 2-3 CAA), 194-139.5 in the other men's result, while the Tribe women (4-2, 3-2 CAA) defeated the Monarchs (3-2, 1-2 CAA), 212-117, in the other women's result.

Both Blue Hen teams continue Colonial Athletic Association action on Saturday, November 13 when they travel to Drexel for a 2 p.m. meet with the Dragons.
