Delaware Men Place Eighth in 800 Freestyle Relay to Open CAA Championships

FAIRFAX, VA -- The University of Delaware women recorded two of the top five times in school history to highlight first-night action at the Colonial Athletic Association Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships Wednesday night at George Mason University’s McKay Natatorium.

The Delaware women are tied for seventh place in the team standings after three events while the Blue Hen men stand tied for eighth after two events. The second day of the four day competition continues Thursday with preliminary action at 12 noon.

Four-time defending men’s champion UNC Wilmington took the first-day team lead with 74 points, just six points ahead of George Mason, while four-time defending women’s champion George Mason took the early lead with 108 points, well ahead of second place UNC Wilmington.

The Delaware women took two seventh place finishes on Wednesday night as freshman Alyson Oliver placed seventh in the three-meter diving event with a score of 220.0 points while the 800 freestyle relay team of Maryann Walker, Kendall Warren, Stephanie House, and Ellen Heinz placed seventh with a time of 7:45.80, the fourth best time in school history.

Also for the UD women, the 200 medley relay tandem of Walker, Emily Watts, Lauren Southard, and Sarah Begley placed eighth with a time of 1:49.15, the third best time in school history. Also for the Hens, Shannon Burke was 20th (184.90 points) and Emily Pretz was 21st (182.80 points) in the three-meter dive.

For the Delaware men, the 800 freestyle relay team placed eighth in a time of 7:02.51 and the 200 medley relay team placed 10th with a clocking of 1:37.58. The 800 freestyle relay team was made up of Adam Blomberg, Brendan Spencer (at right), Joe Virion, and Levan Beridze while Spencer, Mark Erdosy, James Lavender, and Andrew Zinn made up the 200 medley relay squad.
