NEWARK, DE -- Senior men’s lacrosse faceoff specialist Alex Smith was named the University of Delaware 2006-07 Outstanding Senior Male Athlete of the Year at the annual UD Men’s Intercollegiate Athletics Awards luncheon Thursday at the Bob Carpenter Center Lounge.

Smith (Timonium, MD/Boy’s Latin), a faceoff specialist who is a two-time All-American and a candidate for the Tewaaraton Trophy as the top men’s player in college lacrosse, earned Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Year honors earlier this month and was also named the CAA Tournament Outstanding Player after leading the Blue Hens to the CAA Tournament title. He led the NCAA in faceoff percentage in 2005 and 2006, and leads again this year with a .737 winning percentage.

Smith, who has scored five goals and added two assists this season, leads Division I with a school-record 160 groundballs this season and already holds the NCAA records for faceoffs won in a season ( 292 in 2007) and career (1,008).

Smith has led the 15th-ranked Blue Hens to a 12-5 record this season with Delaware headed to Annapolis, MD this Sunday to take on No. 13 UMBC in the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals. Delaware won its NCAA first round game with a 14-8 win over defending national champion and No. 2 seed University of Virginia last Sunday.

Smith was among several Blue Hen student-athletes who were honored at the luncheon for their performances on the playing field, in the classroom and in the community over the past season.
