RICHMOND, VA - University of Delaware swimmer Adam Blomberg (at right), who set three school relay records this past season, has been named the Colonial Athletic Association Scholar-Athlete of the Year for men’s swimming, the league office announced Thursday.
The CAA awards a Scholar-Athlete of the Year for each of the 21 sports that it sponsors each season based on nominations from school sports information directors. Nominees must have a 3.2 or better grade point average, be a sophomore or older in class standing, and be a starter or key reserve for his or her team. The winners are selected by a vote of sports information directors.
Blomberg, a junior from Kennewick, WA (Kamiakin High School), was the second University of Delaware student-athlete to be honored this season with men’s soccer standout Matt Haney also receiving the award during the fall. Voting for spring winners will be conducted in May.
A three-year letterwinner and Dean’s List student, Blomberg set three school records this past season, establishing new UD standards in the 200 freestyle relay (1:24.50), 400 freestyle relay (3:08.24), and 800 freestyle relay (6:53.59).
He has registered 23 career top 10 finishes at the CAA Championships in his three seasons, including placing sixth in both the 200 freestyle relay and 800 freestyle relay at the 2007 championships. Individually, he placed 14th in the 100 butterfly and 16th in the 200 butterfly at this year’s CAA meet.
A Dean’s List student as a physics major with a minor in business and management information systems, Blomberg has been named to the CAA Commissioner’s Academic Honor Roll three times. He carries a 3.79 grade point index and is also a candidate for ESPN The Magazine/College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-American honors.
In addition to Blomberg, also named individual sport Scholar-Athletes of the Year were Old Dominion sophomore Jonathan Adams in men’s basketball, James Madison senior Lesley Dickinson in women’s basketball, UNC Wilmington senior Melissa Milstead in women’s swimming, and Drexel junior Ryan Hluschak in wrestling.
