FAIRFAX, VA -- University of Delaware swimmers and divers posted seven top 10 finishes during the second day of the Colonial Athletic Association Championships Thursday at George Mason University's McKay Natatorium.
The Delaware women are currently in fifth place in the team standings while the Blue Hen men are seventh after the second day of the four-day tournament. Preliminary races will continue Friday at 10 a.m. with finals set for 6 p.m.
George Mason moved into first place in the men’s team standings with 211 points followed by James Madison, defending champion UNC Wilmington, Towson, William & Mary, Old Dominion, Delaware, Davidson, College of Charleston, and Drexel. William & Mary took over the top spot on the women’s side with 234 points followed by defending champion UNC Wilmington, George Mason, Towson, Delaware, Northeastern, Davidson, James Madison, Drexel, College of Charleston, and Old Dominion.
Delaware’s top finisher on the night was freshman diver Ben Blotner who placed fourth in the one-meter dive with a score of 249.0 points. Also for the UD men, Matt Abbruzzese was sixth in the one-meter dive (242.40 points), Andrew Zinn was eighth in the 50 freestyle (21:10), the 400 medley relay team of John Ohlhaver, Mark Erdosy, Adam Blomberg, and Zinn placed ninth with a time of 3:30.22, and Tom Gallagher was ninth in the one-meter dive. Zinn’s time of 21.10 in 50 freestyle was the second fastest time in school history. Ohlhaver set a school record in the 100 backstroke in leading off the 400 medley relay as his time of 52.10 broke themark of 52.40 set by Josh Smith in 1994-95.
For the Delaware women, the 400 medley relay team of Emily Smathers, Kellie Pastore, Sarah Begley, and Maryann Walker placed sixth with a time of 3:54.17 while Michelle Stephens was sixth in the 200 individual medley in 2:08.56. Smathers led off the 400 medley relay with a time of 58.57 in the 100 backstroke to break her own record of 58.61 set in 2005-06.
Also posting top 20 finishes for the UD men were Brendan Spencer’s 19th place finish in the 200 individual medley (1:58.88) and Joe Virion was 20th in the 500 freestyle (4:44.57). For the Delaware women, Meredith Law was 11th in the 500 freestyle (5:02.14), Sarah Begley was 13th in the 50 freestyle with the second fastest time in school history (24.33), and Rachel Greene was 19th in the 50 freestyle (24.66).
