Delaware Swimmers Sweep by Drexel as Arant Wins Three Events

Athlete photoPHILADELPHIA -- Garrett Arant (at right) won three events for the University of Delaware men and Sarah Begley and Kellie Pastore also won three events for the UD women as the Blue Hen swimming and diving teams swept Vermont and host Drexel in a three-way non-league dual meet Saturday afternoon at the Drexel Physical Education Athletic Center Pool.

The Delaware men (4-1, 3-1 Colonial Athletic Association) defeated Drexel for the first time since the 1999-2000 season and matched last season's entire dual win total with a 152-146 victory while the Blue Hen women (6-1, 4-1 CAA) won twice with a 202.5-93.5 win over Drexel and a 200-90 win over Vermont. The Delaware women have now defeated the Dragons 16 straight times.

Arant was one of two double winners for the UD men as he captured the 1,000 freestyle (9:57.82), 200 backstroke (1:58.27), and 500 freestyle (4:55.97) while Andrew Zinn was a winner in the 50 freestyle (21.33) and the 400 freestyle relay (3:11.60) and placed second in the 100 freestyle (47.91) and 200 medley relay (1:37.42).

Brendan Spencer won the 200 individual medley (2:00.76) while Adam Blomberg won the 400 freestyle and was second in the 200 freestyle (1:46.50), 100 butterfly (53.54), and 200 medley relay. John Ohlhaver won the 400 freestyle and was also second in the 100 backstroke (54.42) and the 200 medley relay and Joe Virion was second in the 500 freestyle (5:01.20) and 1,000 freestyle (10:13.90).

The Delaware women had five multiple winners as Sarah Begley, Maryann Walker, and Kellie Pastore each won three events and Rachel Greene and Meredith Law each won two.

Begley won the 400 freestyle relay (3:36.81), 100 butterfly (58.93), and 200 medley relay (1:50.40), Walker won the 400 freestyle relay, 200 backstroke (pool record 2:07.31), and 200 medley relay and was second in the 200 freestyle (1:55.08), and Pastore captured the 100 breaststroke (1:08.32), 200 breaststroke (2:26.50), and 200 medley relay.

Also for the Hens, Greene won the 400 freestyle relay and 50 freestyle (24.83) and was second in the 100 freestyle (54.12) and 200 medley relay (1:54.34) and Law captured the 500 freestyle (5:07.69) and 1,000 freestyle (10:29.47). Stephanie House also won the 200 butterfly (58.93) and was second in the 100 butterfly (59.61).
