PISCATAWAY, NJ -- University of Delaware sophomore Matt Abbruzzese (at right) placed 25th in the men’s one-meter diving competition at the NCAA Zone A Diving Championships Friday afternoon at Rutgers University’s Sonny Werblin Pool.

Abbruzzese, a native of Merrick, NY (Bellmore High School), posted a score of 197.90 in the preliminaries but did not qualify for the final. He will close out the season Saturday when he competes in the three-meter event.

Penn State’s Mike Alderman captured the individual title with a score of 687.7, edging runner-up Alex Volovetski of Pittsburgh who finished with 634.1 points. In the women’s three-meter competition, Syracuse’s Alida DiPlacido took top honors with a score of 639.35. Kate Haynes of Drexel was second with 579.2 points.

No other Delaware athletes competed at the meet, which serves as a qualifier for the NCAA Championships.

Earlier this season, Abbruzzese placed fourth in the three-meter and sixth in the one-meter event at the Colonial Athletic Association Championships Feb. 14-17 at George Mason. He is the current UD record-holder in the three-meter event with a score of 335.20.
