BOSTON, MA -- The University of Delaware women’s swimming and diving team beat Old Dominion but fell to Northeastern during their pod meet at the Barletta Natatorium. During the same meet, the Blue Hen men were dealt their first loss of the season after bowing to Old Dominion.
Cortney Barry led the women’s squad (3-1, 2-1 CAA), which posted a 205-148 victory over Old Dominion before falling to Northeastern, 194-159. On the day, Barry captured two individual competitions.
On the men’s side, Delaware was led by Grady Carter and Andrew Zinn, who both notched four victories, but it was not enough as the Hens (2-1, 1-1 CAA) fell to the Monarchs, 193-160.
Barry won both the 1,650 Yard Freestyle (17:15.37) and the 500 Yard Freestyle (5:07.51). Maryann Walker also posted two wins, capturing the 200 Yard IM in 2:11.62 before teaming with Rachel Greene, Catherine Gallagher, and Donna Healy to win the 200 Yard Freestyle Relay, finishing in 1:40.63.
Emily Smathers also won the 200 Yard Backstroke (2:10.22), while Sarah Begley recorded six second-place finishes. She was the runner-up in the 200 Butterfly (2:08.89), 50 Freestyle (25.02); 100 Freestyle (54.62); and 100 Butterfly (59.43), while she was also a member of the second-place 400 Medley Relay squad (4:01.36) and the 400 Freestyle Relay team (3:38.98).
On the men’s side, the Hens were led by Carter, who won the 100 Yard Freestyle in 47.80 and the 200 Yard IM in 2:00.12. He also teamed with John Ohlhaver, Adam Blomberg, and Andrew Zinn (at right) to win the 200 Yard Medley (1:37.63), and Ohlhaver, Zinn, and Matt Wehrman to capture the 400 Yard Freestyle Relay (3:11.38).
Zinn also won the 50 Freestyle in 21.71, while he joined with Robert MacLeish, Zack Schiavo, and Scott Tsuchitani to win the 200 Yard Freestyle Relay in 1:27.83.
Thomas Gallagher and Matt Abbruzzese each won a diving event as well, with Gallagher taking the 3-Meter Dive (300.30) and Abbruzzese winning the 1- Meter competition (283.70).
Both Delaware swim teams return to action next Saturday when they host Drexel and Vermont at 1 p.m.
