NEWARK, DE -- The University of Delaware men's swim team ended the home portion of its schedule undefeated while the women also won against Widener on Saturday afternoon at the Rawstrom Natatorium.
The men beat the Pride by a 138-76 margin to improve to 9-3 on the season, while the women moved to 12-3 after taking down Widener, 141-46. The men, who earlier in the season defeated Georgetown, Drexel, and Towson in their own pool, had not finished undefeated in dual meets at home since the 1999-2000 season.
On senior day, the men were fittingly led by their upperclassmen as Adam Blomberg (at right) and Andrew Zinn both captured two first-place finishes, while Adam Mullan won once. Troy Sattgast and Daniel Abbott, the only two other seniors on the team, also had successful days at the pool as they both garnered a second-place finish.
Blomberg took home both butterfly events, winning the 100 in 52.89 before taking the 200 in 1:57.55. As usual, Zinn dominated the freestyles, capturing the 50 in 20.66 and the 100 in 45.97.
In the 200-yard Backstroke, Mullan touched the wall first in 2:02.24, while Abbott finished a close second with a time of 2:05.72. During the 100-yard event, Mullan was the runner-up as Craig Young paced the field in 53.78.
Dominic Pavlik also had another strong day, winning the 100-yard Breaststroke (1:01.70) and the 200-Yard Freestyle (1:45.72). Craig Offutt also won the 400-yard IM (4:19.65),
Joe Bruno rounded out the Delaware victors with a win in the 1000-yard Freestyle (10:13.76). He was followed closely by Sattgast, who glided to a second-place finish with a time of 10:20.47.
Overall, the Blue Hen men boasted 10 winners, nine runner-ups, and five third-place finishers.
On the women's side, Delaware displayed a more youthful flair as four freshmen won events. First-year swimmers Meghan Barber, Cortney Barry, Donna Healy, and Lauren Guntner each snagged a first-place finish.
In the 100-yard Breaststroke, Barber paced the field as she clocked in at 1:10.12. Barry then won the 200-yard Freestyle in 1:58.84 before Healy won the 50-yard event in 25.41. Guntner rounded out the freshman winners with a victory in the 400-yard IM (4:41.28).
Kailey Pelton also had a great day, placing first in both butterfly events. She won the 100 in 1:00.97 and then captured the 200 in 2:12.56.
Emily Smathers and Catherine Gallagher also won events, notching victories in the 100-yard Backstroke (1:00.25) and 100-yard Freestyle (54.47) respectively.
Maryann Walker also continued her successful season, winning the 200-yard Backstroke in 2:08.30 after finishing a close second to Smathers in the 100-yard discipline with a time of 1:00.83.
In all, the women recorded 25 top-three finishes, including eight sweeps.
Prior to the meet, the women also celebrated the contributions of their senior members, honoring Stevie Dreher, Kristina Lamoreaux, and Michelle Stephens for their successful careers.
Both teams return to the pool next Friday at 4 p.m. when they travel to Villanova to take on the Wildcats during their last non-conference meet of the season.
