 RICHMOND, Va. – Nine members of the University of Delaware men’s and women’s swim teams have been selected to the Colonial Athletic Association All-Conference squads, the league office announced today.
Hans Gillan and Grady Carter led the way, earning five postseason honors apiece. John Ohlhaver also was selected to four All-CAA teams, while Robert MacLeish was named to the first-team squad in two events.
Gillan (above right), a first-year member of the squad, earned first-team honors after setting new conference records on the way to victories in the 100-butterfly and 400-freestyle relay. In the fly, he paced the field with a record-setting time of 47.35, while he anchored the relay team on the way to a 2:57.73 clocking.
The junior standout also earned second-team honors in the 100-freestyle and 200-freestyle relay before capturing third-team nods for his efforts on the 400-medley relay squad.
Carter (below right) served alongside Gillan on the 200- and 400-freestyle relays as well as the 400-medley team. On an individual level, the Newark native also earned second-team honors in the 50-freestyle and third-team accolades in the 100-free.
Ohlhaver garnered first-team nods after swimming the lead leg on both the victorious 400- and 800-freestyle relay teams. He also took home second-team honors in the 200-freestyle relay and third-team accolades for his individual performance in the 200-freestyle.
MacLeish served as the final member of the 400-freestyle foursome while also competing in the 800-freestyle relay. Zach Schiavo and Dominic Pavlik rounded out the members of the 800-squad, swimming the third and fourth legs, respectively.
Schiavo also was honored for his efforts on the 200-freestyle relay team, while Josh Hyman capped the list of multiple honorees on the men’s side. The freshman took home second-team honors as a member of the 400-medley relay and earned third-team nods for his efforts in the 400-IM.
Craig Young was also a third-team pick as the lead leg on the 400-medley squad.
On the women’s side, Cortney Barry was the lone selection after receiving second-team honors in both the 500- and 1,650-freestyle events. She set school records and met the NCAA provisional qualifying standard in both disciplines during the conference championships.
In the 500-freestyle, she touched the wall in 4:46.64. Later, on the final day of the competition, she returned to the pool with a mark of 16:24.87.
It marks the second straight year that the sophomore standout has earned All-Conference honors after garnering third-team nods in the 1,650-freestyle during her freshman campaign.
Along with the nine Blue Hens, the league office honored Old Dominion’s Arni Arnason and Towson’s Meredith Budner as the CAA Swimmers of the Year. Drexel’s Kate Hynes and Ian Jevnik were also named the conference’s top divers.
Arnason was also selected the top freshman swimmer, while George Mason’s Bryan Bahr was honored as the rookie Diver of the Year. The Patriots’ Ashley Danner and Kristen Meier were the freshman award-winners on the women’s side.
UNC Wilmington’s Dave Allen and Towson’s Pat Mead were also named the top swimming coaches, while George Mason’s Roland McDonald and Drexel’s Larry May were honored as the top diving coaches
