FAIRFAX, Va. – Cortney Barry broke a program record and surpassed an NCAA provisional qualifying time to lead several strong performances by University of Delaware swimmers on the second day of the Colonial Athletic Association Championship meet hosted by George Mason at the Jim McKay Natatorium.
After two days of action, the women stand seventh with 103 points, while the men are fifth with 156. Towson sits atop the women’s standings after accumulating 235 points. The men are led by UNC Wilmington with 242.
During the 500-free, Barry came in second after touching the wall in 4:46.64. With her performance, she took eight seconds off Sara Peffer’s old mark and became a provisional qualifier for the NCAA meet after trumping the ‘B’ standard by nearly three seconds.
It marked the second time in her career that she reached a ‘B’ standard after accomplishing the feat last year in the 1,650-freestyle.
Along with Barry’s record-setting performance, the women were led by Maryann Walker, who finished 14th in the 200-individual medley with a time of 2:06.03. The senior standout later anchored Delaware’s 200-freestyle relay squad that placed seventh in the event with a time of 1:35.09.
On the men’s side, Grady Carter (above) led the team with two second-place performances. During the 50-freestyle, he was the runner-up after touching the wall in 20.25. His performance highlighted a strong showing by the Hens in the sprint freestyle as Hans Gillan finished sixth, John Ohlhaver came in seventh, and Zach Schiavo placed 12th.
The four freestyle standouts then teamed up to place second in the 200-freestyle relay. With Gillan anchoring the squad, the Blue Hens set a new program record with a time of 1:20.76.
Along with the team’s strong performance in the freestyle events, Josh Hyman broke the program record in the 200-individual medley. The freshman standout took down Ryan Fauth’s 10-year-old record in the IM after touching the wall in 1:52.30. His time sliced nearly three seconds off the mark and helped him place sixth in the event.
Delaware also saw three Hens place in the top-16 in the 1-meter dive. Matt Abbruzzese finished seventh with a score of 275.20, while Tom Gallagher placed 10th and Matt Ryan came in 16th.
In other action, Matt Wehrman finished 15th in the 500-freestyle after completing the event in 4:39.36.
The Championship meet continues tomorrow with the finals of the 400-IM, 200-freestyle, and the 100-yard events in the butterfly, breaststroke, and backstroke. Champions in the women’s 1-meter dive and 400-medley relays will also be crowned.
