NEWARK, Del. – Sophomore standout Grady Carter was named the Colonial Athletic Association Swimmer of the Week after leading the Blue Hens to a season-opening victory over George Mason on Saturday, the conference office announced today.
During the Blue Hens’ 156-144 victory over the Patriots, Carter won four events, including two individual competitions.
In the team’s season-opener, Carter won the 50-freestyle in 20.77, while he also touched the wall first in the 100-yard event with a time of 47.61. He won both events in convincing fashion, beating the field by a full second in each discipline.
Earlier in the meet, during the men’s first event of the season, he swam the second leg of the team’s victorious 200-yard medley relay. The foursome eventually finished with a time of 1:35.37, which broke the pool record set by Northeastern in 1996.
To cap off his day, Carter anchored the 200-yard freestyle relay squad that won the event with a time of 1:25.73. He helped the team beat the next closest competitor by nearly three seconds.
The award was the second of Carter’s career after he was also named the CAA Swimmer of the Week on October 29 last season. It also is the second honor this week for the Newark native after he was selected as the Best of the Blue Hens Athlete of the Week for his efforts in the pool.
Last year, Carter was a seven-time top-five finisher at the CAA meet. He won conference titles with the 200- and 400-freestyle relay teams, while he placed third in both the 50- and 100-freestyle events. He also was fourth in the 200- and 400-medley relay and fifth in the 100-breaststroke.
Along with Carter, the conference honored Towson’s Meredith Budner and George Mason’s Ashley Danner as Co-Swimmer of the Week selections on the women’s side. The Patriots also swept the diving awards as Bryan Bahr and Lisa Faulkner were both honored.
The Blue Hens will return to the pool for a two-day pod meet beginning on October 31 at George Mason where they will be joined by UNC Wilmington and Towson.
