RICHMOND, Va. – Blue Hen standout Hans Gillan has been honored as the Colonial Athletic Association Co-Swimmer of the Week after helping lead the University of Delaware swimming team to a 2-1 record during last weekend’s conference pod meet hosted by George Mason.

At the two-day competition, Gillan won four events, including a record-setting performance in the 100-butterfly. During the event, he touched the wall in 50.36, breaking Rich McCormick’s previous record of 51.13 set during the 1988-89 campaign.

Along with his record-setting swim, Gillan helped guide two relay teams to first-place finishes. He anchored the 400-yard freestyle squad that beat the field by over three seconds after cruising to a time of 3:07.57. On Friday, he also was a member of the 400-yard medley foursome that won the event in 3:28.94.

In other individual action, the junior won the 100-yard freestyle in 46.62. He rounded out his strong weekend by placing third in the 200-yard IM with a time of 1:57.55.

His performance over the weekend continued a superb season for the transfer from Georgia. In the team’s first meet of the season against George Mason, Gillan won three events, including a record-breaking effort in the 200-yard medley relay.

It marked the second time this season the Blue Hens have earned a Swimmer of the Week award. Grady Carter picked up the honor on October 14 for his performance in the team’s season-opening meet against the Patriots.

Gillan shared his honor with Old Dominion’s Arni Mar Arnason. Bryan Bahr of George Mason was named the men’s top diver, while fellow Patriot Ashley Danner was named the Swimmer of the Week on the women’s side. Drexel’s Kate Hynes rounded out the weekly award-winners, taking home the Diver of the Week.

The Blue Hens will return to the pool on November 15 when the team hosts LaSalle and Rider at 1 p.m.
