FAIRFAX, Va. – Hans Gillan smashed the University of Delaware’s record in the 100-butterfly as the Blue Hen swimming teams both finished strong at the two-day Colonial Athletic Association pod meet hosted by George Mason at the McKay Natatorium.

Gillan (at right) broke the program’s 20-year old record in the event after cruising to a time of 50.36. His clocking easily beat Rich McCormick’s previous mark of 51.13 set during the 1988-89 campaign.

Following the final day of action, both teams finished with matching 2-1 records. The men picked up a pair of victories after downing George Mason, 190-163, and Towson, 222.5-130.5. The women also earned two wins after beating Mason, 188-165, and UNC Wilmington, 182.5-170.5.

In other action, the men were edged out by the Seahawks, 220.5-132.5, while the women fell to Towson, 243-110.

Delaware boasted seven champions during the meet. Along with his record-breaking performance, Gillan also won the 100-freestyle in 46.62 and helped a pair of relay teams capture their respective events. For the women, Emily Smathers was the champion in the 200-yard backstroke.

Following the first day of action that saw the Blue Hens win the 200-yard freestyle and 400-yard medley relay on the men’s side, the squad won a third relay title on Saturday with a victory in the 400-yard freestyle. Robert MacLeish and Grady Carter championed all three squads, while Gillan was a member of the latter two.

Carter also returned to the pool to post a second-place finish in the 50-freestyle after cruising to a time of 21.04.

Ohlhaver, who also was a member of the 200- and 400-freestyle relays, rounded out the individual victors for the men, pacing the 100-yard backstroke field with a time of 52.48. He also was the runner-up in the 200-yard event, finishing in a time of 1:55.02.

For the women, Maryann Walker placed second behind Smathers in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:06.40. She also returned to the pool along with Kristen McBrien, Erinne Butler, and Donna Healy to place second in the 400-freestyle relay, finishing just over a second behind Towson’s squad with a 3:32.86 clocking.

Cortney Barry also continued her strong showing in the distance events, placing second in the 1,650-freestyle on Friday before finishing third in the 500-yard event on Saturday.

Shannon Burke earned the top finish by a Blue Hen diver after coming in third during the 1-meter event with a score of 217.55.

Both Delaware squads will be back in action on November 15 when the Hens host LaSalle and Rider at 1 p.m.
