FAIRFAX, Va. – Senior Hans Gillan captured two individual crowns and a relay title to highlight a strong performance by the University of Delaware men’s and women’s swimming teams during the second full day of the Colonial Athletic Association Championship meet at George Mason’s Jim McKay Natatorium on Friday evening.

After the second day of competition, the Delaware men moved up to third place with 348.5 points. UNC Wilmington remains in first with a score of 467. On the women’s side, the Hens are holding steady in sixth with 208.5 points. Towson ranks first with a score of 513.

Gillan (at right) was the headliner on Friday as he captured individual titles in both the 100-butterfly and 100-backstroke. In the fly, he defended his 2009 title and dominated the field with a time of 47.54. That pace eclipsed the NCAA B-Standard by eight-tenths of a second.

Later, he returned to the pool to smash the school record in the 100-backstroke with a time of 48.56. That clocking also topped the provisional qualifying time for the NCAA meet and shaved over a full second off Delaware’s previous record.

Along with his two individual titles, he also swam the lead leg on the squad’s victorious 200-yard medley relay team. That unit, rounded out by Ross Buckwalter, Michael Wodoslawsky, and Grady Carter, set a new school and conference record with a time of 1:28.88. Carter capped off the victory in impressive fashion, ripping off a time of 19.43 in the final leg.

During the meet, Buckwalter and Carter also excelled in the 100-breaststroke after they each topped the NCAA B-Standard. Buckwalter led the way, placing third in the finals with a time of 54.46. Earlier in the day, during the preliminaries, he set a new school record with a time of 53.75. That blazing pace also marked the seventh fastest clocking in the country as of the latest national results.

In the same event, Carter finished just behind his teammate in fourth-place with a time of 55.39.

Among other top Blue Hen performers, Wodoslawsky cruised to a sixth-place showing in the 100-fly (49.52), while Ryan Roberts came in seventh during the 200-freestyle (1:40.59). Craig Young also notched a ninth-place showing in the 100-backstroke (51.06), and Michael Garbarino tallied a 10th place finish in the 400-IM (4:07.49).

Delaware’s 800-yard medley relay team, led by Roberts, Zach Wheatley, Zach Schiavo, and Robert MacLeish, also placed third in that event. The foursome finished with a time of 6:45.70.

On the women’s side, Delaware was led by the UD divers, who posted a pair of top-10 finishes in the 1-meter board. During the event, Emily Kasyon finished seventh with a score of 235.30, while teammate Erika Bilenki was just behind her in eighth with a score of 223.45.

Courtney Raw led the women’s swimmers, placing seventh in the 100-backstroke after touching the wall in 56.39. She also swam the lead leg on the squad’s 200-medley relay team that finished seventh with a school-record time of 1:44.59. She was joined on that squad by Hannah Facchine, Elise Kanegawa, and Erinne Butler.

Stephanie Dodd also placed seventh in the 400-IM with a time of 4:25.56, while Donna Healy was the team’s top finisher in the 200-freestyle after placing 13th with a time of 1:52.65.
