FAIRFAX, Va. –The men’s 400-freestyle relay squad captured the program’s fourth title of the 2010 Colonial Athletic Association championship meet as the University of Delaware men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams wrapped up the competition on Saturday evening at George Mason’s Jim McKay Natatorium.
With their performance on the final day, the Delaware men captured their third straight third-place finish with 542.5 points. UNC Wilmington remained at the top of the standings, grabbing their ninth-straight title with a score of 705. On the women’s side, the Hens finished in seventh with 245.5 points. Towson won the program’s third crown in a row with a score of 792.
Delaware’s 400-yard freestyle relay team, comprised of Grady Carter, Ryan Roberts (at right), Robert MacLeish, and Hans Gillan, cruised to the championship with a time of 2:59.45. That mark easily eclipsed the NCAA B Standard of 3:01.09.
In the 100-freestyle, Gillan also captured second-place after posting a time of 44.78. The standout senior speedster just out-touched Carter, who finished fourth after clocking in at 45.33. MacLeish also came in 11th during the event with a mark of 46.20.
With his victory in the 400-relay and second-place finish in the 100-free, Gillan finished the meet with 57 points. That total ranked second at the competition, trailing George Mason’s Preston Wolter by three. Carter also ranked ninth with 46 points, while Roberts stood 10th with 45.
In the 200-backstroke, the Blue Hens had an outstanding effort as the squad had four top-10 finishers. Roberts led the way, placing third with a time of 1:49.10. Craig Young also came in fifth after touching the wall in 1:49.80, Nick Woomer finished sixth in 1:50.58, and Matt McCarthy rounded out the group in ninth after completing the event in 1:51.65.
Andrew Speese also had a strong day in the pool, posting a program record time in the 200-butterfly. In the event, he finished fifth after clocking in at 1:50.59.
In other events, Ross Buckwalter picked up a third-place finish in the 200-breaststroke with a time of 2:03.91, while Thomas Gallagher placed seventh in the 3-meter board with a score of 253.30.
The Delaware women posted two top-10 finishes in the 1,650-freestyle to highlight the final day of the meet. Stephanie Dodd led the team with a fourth-place showing after touching the wall in 16:49.72. Cortney Barry was close behind, finishing sixth with a time of 16:57.22.
Donna Healy also led the team in the 100-freestyle, cruising to an 11th place finish in 51.97. Hannah Facchine also ranked 14th in the 200-breaststroke after clocking in at 2:21.73.
