Final Results
NEWARK, Del. –The University of Delaware swimming & diving teams were led by a record-setting relay performance on the way to a strong showing on the final day of the squad’s Colonial Athletic Association Pod Meet hosted by the Blue Hens at the Rawstrom Natatorium.
During the two-day competition, which also featured George Mason, Towson, and UNC Wilmington, the UD men posted two victories, trumping Mason, 204-149, and Towson, 266-85. The squad also fell to UNCW, 216-137.
On the women’s side, the Hens posted a 230-123 victory over the Patriots before falling to Towson, 232.5-120.5, and UNCW, 230.5-122.5.
The meet was highlighted by a record-setting performance by the men’s 200-medley relay team. The foursome of Ryan Roberts, Ross Buckwalter, Hans Gillan, and Grady Carter (above) opened Saturday’s action by finishing the event in a pool-record time of 1:33.97.
Carter, Gillan, and Roberts also all earned two individual victories apiece during the meet. Carter captured the 50-freestyle on Friday night with a time of 20.98 and returned on Saturday to take the 100-yard event in 45.96.
Roberts also won the 200-freestyle in 1:43.81 and the 200-backstroke in 1:52.61. Gillan rounded out the multiple-victors, taking the 100-butterfly in 50.57 and the 100-backstroke in 51.21.
Fittingly, the three standouts also teamed up to cap off the meet in fine fashion after teaming with Robert MacLeish in the 400-freestyle relay. The foursome cruised to the victory with a time of 3:07.12.
On the women’s side, Delaware was led by Hannah Facchine, who posted three third-place finishes. After teaming with Courtney Raw, Elise Kanegawa, and Donna Healy for a third-place showing in the 400-medley relay, she returned to the pool to place third in both breaststroke events. In the 100-yard discipline, she posted a time of 1:06.20 before touching the wall in 2:23.25 during the 200-yard event.
The 200-freestyle crew of Healy, Jena Marrinucci, Megan Huber, and Erinne Butler posted the finest finish on the women’s side for UD after placing second with a time of 1:37.94.
Butler also had a third-place finish in the 50-freestyle (24.52), while Raw was third in the 100-backstroke with a time of 59.33. Kanegawa also came in third in the 100-fly after placing in 59.10, while Cortney Barry was the third-place finisher during the 1,650-freestyle with a 17:12.94 clocking.
The squad’s 400-freestyle relay team, led by Meghan Barber, Donna Healy, Kristen McBrien, and Jena Marrinucci, had a third-place finish as well with a time of 3:35.14. Carly Sheppard was the team’s top diver during the meet, garnering a third-place finish in the 1-meter board with a score of 224.10.
Delaware will return to action next Saturday when the team travels to LaSalle to take on the Explorers and Rider at 1 p.m.
