NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware men’s and women’s swim teams named four captains for the 2009-10 campaign, head coach John Hayman announced today.

The men’s swimming and diving squad will be led into action by Craig Offutt (at right) and Dominic Pavlik, while the women will be guided by Meghan Barber and Marianne Flynn.

Offutt, a senior from Reisterstown, Md. (Hereford) who also served as a captain last year, is one of the top long distance swimmers on the team. During the 2009 Colonial Athletic Association championship meet, he completed the 1,650-freestyle in 16:16.85, marking the fastest time on the team during the year. His performance also marked the sixth-best clocking in program history.

A strong competitor in the backstroke as well, he currently holds top-10 times in the 400-individual medley and 200-back. In the former, he stands seventh all-time with a 4:10.57 mark, while he ranks fourth in the latter with a time of 1:53.96.

Pavlik, a third-year standout from Collegeville, Pa. (Perkiomen Valley), is coming off a strong sophomore campaign that saw him earn his first conference crown. Last year, aided by his performance during the event, Delaware captured the 800-freestyle relay title with a school-record time of 6:40.27.

On an individual level, he also ranks in the top-five in program history in the 200-breaststroke and 1000-freestyle. Last year, he posted the fourth-fastest time in the 1000-free after finishing in 9:49.30, while he recorded the fifth-best showing in the 200-breast with a time of 2:06.31.

Barber, a junior from Collegeville, Pa. (Perkiomen Valley), has already solidified her spot as one of the top competitors on the women’s side for Delaware. Last year, she helped guide two relay teams to school-record performances as she helped lead the 400-freestyle foursome to a time of 3:26.79 and the 800-freestyle group to a 7:27.79 showing.

During the 2008-09 campaign, she also ranked second on the team in the 200-IM and both breaststroke events. Her time of 1:04.59 in the 100-breast is third in program history, while her 2:21.61 clocking in the 200-yard event is fifth all-time.

Flynn, a native of Sinking Spring, Pa. (Wilson) and a second-year transfer from Virginia Tech, is a junior. Last year, she burst onto the scene at UD as a sophomore and set four program records, including two in individual events.

One of the top conference competitors in the breaststroke, she finished fifth in the 100- during the CAA championship meet with a school-record time of 1:03.45. She also set a new mark in the 200- after completing the event in 2:18.96, while she helped guide the 200- and 400-medley relay teams to school records as well.

The four standouts will help the Blue Hens build upon their strong 2008-09 seasons. The men placed third during the CAA meet last year and finished the regular season with an 11-2 record, while the women came in sixth after a 9-3 performance during the year.
