RICHMOND, Va. – Grady Carter has been named the Colonial Athletic Association Men’s Swimmer of the Week, while Carly Sheppard has been honored as the Women’s Diver of the Week for their performances during Loyola’s H2Ounds Invitational over the weekend.

During the meet, the two standouts helped lead the Blue Hens to sweeps over Loyola, Iona, and Marist. With those victories, both the men and women improved to 8-2 on the season entering their winter hiatus.

Carter had an incredible showing during the two-day meet as the Newark native won all seven events in which he entered. He served as a key member on four victorious relay teams and also captured three individual events during the competition.

During the sprint freestyles, he swept both the 50- and 100-yard events. In the 50-free, he posted a season-best time of 20.66. Later, he returned to the pool to capture the 100- after clocking in at 45.72.

He rounded out the individual portion of the meet by snatching the 100-backstroke with a time of 51.89. That also marked his finest time of the season.

Carter also served as the anchor leg on three relay teams that captured titles. He opened the weekend by guiding the 400-medley foursome to a time of 3:23.65. Later, he led the 200-medley team to a win with a time of 1:34.11 before capping off the meet with a victory in the 400-freestyle relay after finishing in 3:06.18.

The junior standout also picked up a victory in the 200-freestyle relay after swimming the lead leg on the squad that finished in 1:23.79.

Overall, it is Carter’s fifth weekly honor of his career and his second this season. He was also named the conference’s top swimmer on November 10.

Sheppard also had a strong performance during the meet as the freshman standout captured both diving events while leading the women to a sweep.

The Ocean City, N.J. native kicked off the meet on Friday with a victory in the 3-meter board after posting a score of 256.10. That mark was the highest recorded by a Blue Hen in the event since the 2006-07 season.

On Saturday, Sheppard returned to the pool to complete her sweep with a win in the 1-meter board. During that event, she led all divers after posting a 219.95 mark.

With the honor, Sheppard is Delaware’s first women’s diver to win the weekly award since Alyson Oliver garnered the accolade twice during the 2005-06 season.

Along with the two Blue Hens, the CAA also honored Drexel’s Ian Jevnik as the men’s Diver of the Week, while UNC Wilmington’s Caitlin Kirsteier was selected as the women’s top swimmer.

Carter and Sheppard will lead the Blue Hens back into action on January 9 when the team hosts Towson at 1 p.m. The squad will also take part in Florida training at the start of the New Year.
