RICHMOND, Va. – Hans Gillan has been named the Colonial Athletic Association men’s Swimmer of the Week after leading the University of Delaware swim team to a victory over Drexel on Saturday at the Rawstrom Natatorium.
Against the Dragons, Gillan won three events to lead the Blue Hens to a 180-114 victory. On Senior Day, the veteran speedster won two individual titles, highlighted by a record-setting victory in the 100-backstroke, and helped guide a triumphant relay team.
During the backstroke, Gillan cruised to a victory in 50.18, which was over a second faster the next closest competitor. His performance also broke the 17-year-old Rawstrom Natatorium record set by Jason Webb in 1993.
Later, Gillan returned to the pool to post a season-best time in the 100-butterfly. During that event, he touched the wall in 49.43, which marked the fastest time posted by a swimmer in the CAA this season. He also swam the third leg on the victorious 400-medley relay team that finished in 3:26.56.
In his career at Delaware, Gillan is a two-time conference champion after winning the 100-butterfly and 400-freestyle relay during last year’s title meet. A five-time All-Conference selection, he has been named the men’s Swimmer of the Week on four occasions during his career.
Gillan is the third Blue Hen to earn the CAA weekly honor this season. Grady Carter was named the Swimmer of the Week twice, while Craig Young garnered the accolade last week.
Along with Gillan, the conference office honored George Mason’s Bryan Bahr as the men’s Diver of the Week. Towson’s Meredith Budner and UNC Wilmington’s Caitlin Kirsteier shared the women’s top swimming honor, while Mason’s Kristen Meier earned the diving award.
