PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- Grady Carter (at right) and Cortney Barry each won two events as the University of Delaware men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams both picked up victories over host La Salle and Rider Saturday afternoon at Kirk Pool.
The Blue Hen men, who improved to 5-2 on the season, posted identical 180-119 victories over both the Explorers and Broncs. The UD women, who are also now 5-2 this year, defeated Rider, 187-111, and topped La Salle, 188.5-108.5.
Carter led the Delaware men’s team by winning the 50 freestyle in 21.33 and the 100 freestyle in 46.89, while Ryan Roberts captured the 1000 freestyle in 9:44.48. Andrew Speese took the 200 butterfly in 1:55.94, while Josh Hyman won the 200 individual medley in a time of 1:58.82.
The Blue Hens also took both relay events, as the 200 medley relay team of Roberts, Ross Buckwalter, Speese and Carter won its event in 1:35.88 while the 400 freestyle relay team of Carter, Zach Schiavo, Robert MacLeish and Roberts took its event in 3:11.16.
MacLeish also had a pair of second place finishes for the Blue Hens, as he swam the 50 freestyle in 21.64 and touched the wall in 47.83 during the 100 freestyle. Roberts finished second in the 200 backstroke in 1:53.24, while Nicholas Woomer was second in the 100 backstroke in 53.71 and Buckwalter came in second in the 100 breaststroke in 59.31. Hyman placed second in the 200 breaststroke in 2:13.31, while Michael Garbarino finished second in the 200 butterfly in 1:57.15. Thomas Gallagher was also second in the 3-meter diving event as he accumulated 262.20 points.
Barry paced the Delaware women’s team by winning the 1000 freestyle in 10:20.81 and the 500 freestyle in 5:05.66. Donna Healy won the 50 freestyle in 24.66 for the Blue Hens, while Elise Kanegawa captured the 100 butterfly in 58.75.
The UD 200 medley relay team of Courtney Raw, Hannah Facchine, Kanegawa, and Erinne Butler won its event in 1:49.17, while the 400 freestyle relay team of Raw, Butler, Kristen McBrien and Healy captured its event with a time of 3:34.59.
Healy also finished second in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:55.40, while Marianne Flynn was second in the 100 breaststroke in 1:07.36 and Sarah Vandoren placed second in the 200 butterfly in 2:09.04. Facchine came in second in the 200 breaststroke in 2:24.10 for the Blue Hens, while Emily Morse finished second in the 100 butterfly in 59.50
Both Delaware swimming and diving teams will be back in action on December 4-5 when they compete in the Loyola College Invitational.
