BALTIMORE - The University of Delaware men’s and women’s swimming teams kicked off the Loyola College H2Ounds Invitational with an impressive showing as the Blue Hens won eight of the 12 events during the first day of the two-day meet on Friday evening at the Mangione Aquatic Center.
On the women’s side, Delaware captured five of the six disciplines, including a pair of victories by Cortney Barry. For the men, the Blue Hens won three titles, highlighted by two wins from Grady Carter.
After the first day of the meet, Delaware holds commanding advantages over all three of its opponents. The men lead Iona, 88-21, Loyola, 87-23, and Marist, 84-26. The women also are on top of the standings as the squad is ahead of Iona, 79-30, Loyola, 71-36, and Marist, 84-26.
Barry captured an individual title after pacing the field in the 500-freestyle with a time of 5:01.13. She also teamed with Donna Healy, Meghan Barber, and Lesley Payonk to take the 800-freestyle relay in 7:43.54.
The foursome of Healy, Courtney Raw, Hannah Facchine, and Elise Kanegawa also won the 400-medley relay with a time of 3:52.29. Freshman standout MaryKathryn Harris rounded out the team’s top swimmers, cruising to the title in the 50-freestyle after clocking in at 24.16.
Diver Carly Sheppard also took the top spot in the 3-meter board after posting a winning score of 256.10.
On the men’s side, Carter sped to a victory in the 50-freestyle with a time of 20.66. He also joined forces with Craig Young, Ross Buckwalter, and Hans Gillan (above) to take the 400-medley relay after touching the wall in 3:23.65.
Delaware also picked up a victory in the 800-freestyle relay. The foursome of Ryan Roberts, Zach Schiavo, Robert MacLeish, and Dominic Pavlik won the event with a time of 6:56.36.
Both the men and women will return to action tomorrow. The final day of the invitational will begin at 10 a.m. before the afternoon session kicks of at 3 p.m.
