BALTIMORE - The University of Delaware men’s and women’s swimming teams capped off an impressive showing during the Loyola Invitational by sweeping Iona, Loyola, and Marist during the two-day meet at the Mangione Aquatic Center on Saturday.
On the women’s side, Delaware captured 11 events on the final day of the meet, including a pair of individual victories by Hannah Facchine. For the men, the Blue Hens won seven titles, highlighted by five wins from Grady Carter (at right).
The men closed out the meet by beating Iona, 258-110, Loyola, 228-136, and Marist, 288-81. The women also came out on top against each opponent as the squad defeated Iona, 289-78, Loyola, 296-74, and Marist, 266-102.
Facchine helped lead an impressive performance by the women as the sophomore standout took both breaststrokes. In the 100-yard event, she cruised to a time of 1:05.79 before capturing the 200- in 2:21.19. Later, she also teamed with Courtney Raw, Elise Kanegawa, and MaryKathryn Harris to take the 200-medley relay in 1:47.18.
Kanegawa and Raw also won individual events as the former captured the 100-butterfly in 57.53, while the latter took the 100-backstroke in 56.93. Both swimmers also returned to win other relay events. Kanegawa teamed with Harris, Megan Huber, and Kristen McBrien to win the 200-freestyle relay with a time of 1:37.64, while Raw joined Harris, Donna Healy, and Meghan Barber to take the 400-free in 3:32.39.
In other events, Mackenzie Howarth took the 400-IM in 4:36.06, Cortney Barry cruised to a win in the 1,650-freestyle with a time of 17:17.23, and Sarah Vandoren led a bevy of strong performances in the 200-butterfly after taking the top spot in 2:07.73.
Diver Carly Sheppard rounded out the individual victors as the freshman captured her second event of the meet after posting a score of 219.95 in the 1-meter board.
For the men, Carter had another exceptional day in the pool as he won a pair of individual events and also teamed up for three relay titles. The Newark native took the 100-backstroke in 51.89 and the 100-free in 45.72.
Carter also teamed with Hans Gillan, Robert MacLeish, and Zach Schiavo to win the 200-freetsyle relay in 1:23.79. Later, he joined with Gillan, Ryan Roberts, and Dominic Pavlik to win the 200-medley in 1:34.11, before pairing with Gillan, Roberts, and MacLeish to snatch the 400-freestyle relay in 3:06.18.
Delaware also boasted a pair of other individual winners as Ross Buckwalter and Matt Wehrman captured events as well. Buckwalter took the 100-breaststroke in 58.03, and Wehrman touched the wall first in the 1,650-freestyle in 16:29.41.
The first day of the meet was highlighted by eight victories from the Blue Hens in the invitational’s first 12 events. Grady Carter and MaryKathryn Harris won the 50-freestyle disciplines, while all four relay teams captured titles as well on Friday.
Cortney Barry also took the top spot in the 500-freestyle on the first day of competition, and Carly Sheppard clinched a first-place finish after posting a score of 256.10 in the three-meter board.
Delaware will take the rest of the month off before participating in winter training in Florida on January 2. The teams will then return north on January 9 for a home meet against Towson at 1 p.m.
