Delaware Sinks Widener in Final Home Meet of the Season

NEWARK, Del. –The University of Delaware men’s and women’s swimming teams wrapped up their home slate with a pair of victories over Widener on Wednesday evening at the Rawstrom Natatorium.

The men defeated Widener, 166-89, while the women triumphed, 158-75. Elise Kanegawa and Aubrey Caldwell each won a pair of events for the women, while Grady Carter and Jacob Magnan (at right) both captured two individual events on the men’s side.

Although Delaware will host a diving-only meet with West Chester and Towson on February 13, the Blue Hen swimmers wrapped up the home portion of their season with an outstanding 6-1 record at the Rawstrom Natatorium. The women ended with a 4-3 mark but are still undefeated on the road.

For the men, Carter finished the meet with three victories. After teaming with Craig Young, Ross Buckwalter, and Andrew Speese to win the 200-medley relay in 1:35.57, he returned to the pool to capture both the 100-breaststroke (1:00.41) and 50-freestyle (21.16).

Magnan also picked up a pair of individual titles after sweeping the distance freestyles. He touched the wall first during the 1000-free in 9:51.54 before also taking the 500 with a time of 4:48.99. Later in the meet, Young rounded out the list of multiple victors. After serving on the victorious relay squad, he returned to win the 200-backstroke in 1:54.53.

The Blue Hens also swept both butterfly events as Michael Moore grabbed the 200 in 1:59.83 before Nick Woomer snatched the 100 in 53.27. Jim Losi also won the 200-free in 1:45.51, Robert MacLeish took the 100-back in 52.37, and Dominic Pavlik captured the 100-freestyle in 48.65.

On the women’s side, Caldwell and Kanegawa both served alongside Meghan Barber and Donna Healy on the victorious 200-medley relay team that cruised to a title in 1:51.17. Later, Caldwell won the 200-freestyle in 1:55.61, while Kanegawa touched the wall first in the 100-butterfly after finishing in 58.23.

Along with Cadwell’s win in the 200-free, the Blue Hens captured three other freestyle events during the meet. MaryKathryn Harris beat the field in the 50 with a time of 24.31, Megan Huber clocked in first in the 100 after posting a time of 54.72, and Allie Brown glided to a victory in the 500 after touching the wall in 5:07.30.

Delaware also swept all of the backstroke and breaststroke events against the Pride. Jena Marrinucci won the 100-back in 1:00.34, while Lauren Guntner took the 200 in 2:10.19. In the breaststrokes, Marianne Flynn earned the top spot in the 100 with a time of 1:06.76, and Hannah Facchine dominated in the 200 with a 2:25.37 showing.

Kiley Friedrich rounded out the list of victorious Hens as she cruised to the top spot in the 200-butterfly with a time of 2:08.08.

Delaware will return to action on Saturday when the Hens travel to UMBC to take on the Retrievers as well as William & Mary at 1 p.m.
