RICHMOND, Va. – Craig Young has been named the Colonial Athletic Association Men’s Swimmer of the Week after helping lead the University of Delaware swimming team to a victory over Towson during a conference meet at the Rawstrom Natatorium on Saturday.
In Delaware’s 278-70 victory over the Tigers, Young won all four events in which he entered. During the meet, the junior speedster captured three individual titles and helped guide a victorious relay team.
Young, a native of Newark, Del., opened the meet by swimming the lead leg on the Blue Hens’ top 200-medley relay team. Guided by his efforts, the foursome cruised to the victory in 1:34.08, out-distancing the next closest team by over three seconds.
Later, Young returned to the pool to sweep both backstroke events and take home the title in the 200-individual medley. He posted season-best times in both backstrokes after finishing the 100-yard event in 52.11 before snatching the 200 in 1:52.44.
Young wrapped up his strong performance by touching the wall first in the 200-medley with a time of 1:56.52. That time was nearly four seconds faster than the mark posted by the next closest competitor.
In his career, Young holds the school record in the 200-backstroke and ranks second in both the 100-back and 400-individual medley. He earned two top-five finishes at last year’s CAA championship meet after placing third in the 400-medley relay and fifth in the 200-back.
Young is the second Blue Hen to earn the men’s weekly honor this season after teammate Grady Carter garnered the award on November 10 and December 8.
Along with Young, the CAA honored Drexel’s Ian Jevnick as the men’s diver of the week, while Towson’s Meredith Budner and Carolina Baker swept the women’s awards.
