Can the dynasty continue? The University of Delaware men's swimming and diving squad captured an unprecedented third straight America East Conference team title a year ago, and a fourth straight is certainly within reach. Head coach John Hayman, the America East Coach of the Year each of the last three seasons, has built a conference dynasty in Newark and he is hoping it continues as the Hens return 11 letterwinners from last year' squad, including six-time conference breaststroke champion Tom "T.J." Maday. "We are certainly looking to repeat as conference champions, but the feat could be difficult," said Hayman, who will enter his 11th season at the helm of the Blue Hens this winter. "Talent depth is not a problem in middle distance and distance freestyle since we are returning all of our finalists from last year. Our old standbys, Jim Reichart, Luke Schenck, Brian McGillen, John Fernandes, and T.J. Maday will be relied upon heavily for both their experience and talent in big meets." Maday, a senior honor student in engineering, has captured six conference breaststroke titles in his career, winning the 100 and 200 double each of the past two seasons. He is the school record holder in the 200 breaststroke (2:04.40) and has earned All-East honors twice, finishing sixth in the 200 breaststroke at the 1999 ECAC meet.He will be trying become the first swimmer in America East history to complete three consecutive double victories in the two breaststroke events. Other standouts for the Hens include Reichart, a senior tri-captain and a six-time America East top four finisher including back to back third place finishes in the 1,650 freestyle; Schenck, a junior and the America East runner-up in the 1,650 freestyle each of the past two seasons; and McGillen, a senior tri-captain who placed in the top 10 in seven events a year ago at the conference meet. All three are outstanding students and CoSIDA Academic All-American candidates. McGillen was the America East Men's Swimming Scholar-Athlete of the Year last season when he was a first team All-District Academic All-American. Also for the Hens, sophomore John Fernandes placed second in the 200 freestyle relay and third in the 100 breaststroke at the America East meet a year ago; sophomore Ian Miller was second in the 200 freestyle relay and third in the 100 freestyle; and junior Michael Gallaher was the America East runner-up in the 500 freestyle and 800 freestyle relay a year ago when he was voted the team's Most Improved Swimmer. The Blue Hens will also be solid in the diving events thanks to record setting senior Brian Aston, one of the premier divers in the America East conference. A tri-captain, Aston was the league runner-up in the three-meter and third in the one-meter event a year ago and has never placed lower than third in a league championship diving event in three seasons with the Blue Hens. Despite the list of experienced swimmers, the Blue Hens will be young this season with 23 freshmen or sophomores on the 30-man roster. "We had a record 30 freshmen come out for the team and it was quite a competitive atmosphere," said Hayman. "A total of 14 made the squad and will bring much needed depth in the backstroke (Brendan Donnelly, Nick Grossman), breaststroke (Tim Wasiewski, Anthony Pierce), butterfly (Rich Shellenberger, Chris Karelus), and freestyle (Kevin Weisser, Pete Murphy, Brian Salcetti, Joe Kauchok, and Sam Blacker)." The Blue Hens will compete in 10 dual meets during the season leading up to the America East Championships that will be held at Delaware's Harry Rawstrom Natatorium Feb. 18-20.
