No. 4 Hens Upset by Vermont in First Round; Head to Consolation Match vs. Drexel

FLUSHING, NY – The No. 2 seed University of Delaware women’s team defeated No. 7 Towson 7-2 and the No. 5 seed University of Vermont men defeated the No. 4 seed Blue Hens 4-2 in the opening round of the America East Tennis championships Thursday at the United States Tennis Center.

The Delaware women (12-4), runners-up at the championships for the last six years, advanced to Friday’s semifinals vs. No. 6 Hartford at 12 noon. Hartford upset No. 3 New Hampshire 5-3 in their first round match.

In other first round matches, No. 1 Boston University, the five-time defending champion, defeated No. 8 Drexel 9-0 and No. 4 Hofstra defeated No. 5 Towson 8-0.

On the men’s side, Delaware (11-12) dropped its quarterfinal match to Vermont and will now play Drexel in the consolation round Friday at 9 a.m.

In other first round matches, No. 3 Hartford defeated No. 6 Boston University 5-0, No. 2 Towson downed No. 7 New Hampshire 6-1, and No. 1 seed and defending champion Hofstra ousted No. 8 Drexel 6-1.

In the women’s match, Delaware swept the three doubles matches and won four of the six singles matches. Winning at singles for Delaware were Karen Greenstein at No. 3, Erin Kamen at No. 4, Jessica Wilkes at No. 5, and Tracy Guerin at No. 6.

Kamen and Wilkes each improved to 13-3 on the season with Kamen winning her 71st career singles match, just two shy of the record 73 won by current UD head coach Laura Travis in 1985-89. Delaware’s No. 3 doubles team of Guerin and Kamen also won, improving the Hens’ record at that position to 13-0 this season.

The Delaware men, who placed third each of the last two seasons, could manage just two wins on the day as freshman Lee Kennedy won at No. 2 singles and Jesse Leopold, a native of Vermont, won at No. 3 singles. Kennedy improved to a team-leading 15-8 mark in singles this season.
