March 18, 2000 Kennedy, Mouber Claim Hens' Lone Win in Doubles
VILLANOVA, PA -- The University of Delaware men's and women's tennis teams split a non-league match at Villanova University Saturday afternoon. The Blue Hen women (7-1) returned to action for the first time since the fall and posted a 6-3 win over the Wildcats while the Villanova men upended Delaware (3-7) by a 7-0 score. The Delaware women, playing for the first time since an Oct. 17 loss to Howard, won four of the six singles matches on their way to the victory. No.1 player, Elly Giese, No. 3 Erin Kamen, No. 5 Jessica Wilkes, and No. 6 Martine Street all posted singles wins with Wilkes winning 7-6 (7-5 tie-breaker), 7-6 (7-3 tie-breaker) over Liz Farrell. In doubles play, the Hens took two of three matches with Giese and Kristin Wasniewski teaming for an 8-5 win at the No. 1 spot and Kamen and Tracy Guerin winning 8-6 at the No. 3 spot. Kamen improved to 8-0 on the season in singles while Wilkes and Street improved to 7-1. Wasniewski suffered her first singles loss of the season, dropping a 5-7, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 to Ashley Young at the No. 2 spot. The Delaware men did not fare as well, dropping their second straight match of the spring. The Hens picked up only one win on the day as the No. 2 doubles team of David Mouber and Lee Kennedy improved to 4-1 on the season by posting a 9-8 win over Villanova's Mike Mock and Chris Gonzalez. The Hens lost two singles matches in three sets as Robert Waibel downed Delaware's Chris Johnson 6-0, 2-6, 6-1 at the No. 1 spot and Ryan Devine downed Mouber 2-6, 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 4 position. Kennedy had a four-match win streak in singles snapped with a 6-1, 6-1 loss to Josh Scofield at the No. 3 spot.
