PRINCETON, NJ -- Four members of
the University of Delaware men's and women's tennis teams
competed at the Omni Hotels/Intercollegiate Tennis
Association Eastern Regionals this weekend (Oct. 26-27) at
Princeton University and the University of
Pennsylvania.
In the men's competition at Princeton's
Jadwin Gymnasium, Delaware sophomore Sanjay Khindri
(Emmaus/Macungie, PA) became the first men's player in
UD head coach Laura Travis' nine-year tenure to win a
match at the ITA tournament. In all 128 players competed in
singles.
Khindri (5-8) defeated Colin Torrence of
Fairfield 6-4, 7-5 in the first round before falling to No.
15 seed Zach Gallin of Cornell by a score of 6-1,
6-4.
Khindri later teamed with freshman
John Tully (Pittsford Sutherland/Pittsford, NY) to
capture their first round match with an 8-2 win over Rhode
Island's team of Dave Gutstein and Bill Moran. No. 7 seed
Ryan Coyle and Chris Shackelton of Yale defeated Khindri and
Tully 8-6 in the second round. Khindri and Tully finished
the fall season with a 3-3 record in doubles play.
In the women's competition at Penn's Ley
Pavilion, Blue Hen senior Elly Giese (National
Cathedral/Washington, DC) fell to No. 4 seed Ashley Kroh of
Marshall by a 6-2, 6-0 score in the first round. Giese
posted 5-3 record during the fall season.
In doubles play, the Delaware team of
Giese and junior Jessica Wilkes (Nazareth/Bethlehem,
PA) fell to Marshall's Jessica Johnson and Anna Mitina.
Giese and Wilkes finished the fall season with a record of
5-3 in doubles.
Both Delaware teams will resume play in
the March.
