Hens Split Pair of Matches, Clinch Third Place in
Tourney
TOWSON, MD -- The University of
Delaware men's tennis team split a pair of matches Saturday
to place third overall at the Towson University
Invitational.
The Blue Hens, who moved their dual
record to 5-2 on the season, opened the day with a 3-2 loss
to Georgetown and followed with a 4-1 win over host Towson
to place third in the eight-team tournament.
Georgetown took the team title, going 4-0
over the two-day tournament. UMBC placed second while
Delaware, which defeated Loyola and St. Joseph's Friday,
placed third. Towson was fourth followed by St. Joseph's,
Loyola, Johns Hopkins, and Monmouth.
Delaware lost the first match of the day
against Georgetown as the two teams split four singles
matches before the Hoyas clinched the win with the doubles
victory.
John Tully and Lee Kennedy
picked up singles victories for the Hens while Georgetown's
doubles team of Nick Sklavounos and Ken Jordan teamed for a
4-6, 7-6, 6-1 win over Delaware's Ari Zweig and
Jason Rabinowitz to clinch the win.
In the second match of the day, the Hens
knocked off the host Tigers as No. 1 player Sanjay
Khindri, No. 2 Tully, and No. 4 player Dustin
Lewis each won their singles matches. Zweig and
Rabinowitz posted a 6-4, 7-6 (6), 10-8 win over Towson's
Andrew Davis and Chris Rowland in doubles.
Tully, a freshman, was Delaware's top
player during the tournament, winning all four of his
singles matches to improve to 9-1 on the season.
Delaware will continue action Oct. 20-21
at the Kutztown (Pa.) Invitational.
