Blue Hens Topple BU to Earn Fifth Place

 

No. 2 Player Lee Kennedy Won Two Matches for the Hens

BURLINGTON, VT The University of Delaware men’s tennis team claimed fifth place at the America East championships Sunday at the University of Vermont’s Roy Patrick Complex, defeating No. 5 seed Boston University in the consolation finals.

The Blue Hens, the No. 3 seed in the tournament, fell to No. 6 Hartford in Friday’s opening round before coming back to down No. 7 New Hampshire 6-1 in the consolation first round Saturday. The win improves Delaware’s record to 13-9 on the season.

In the championship match, defending champion and No. 1 seed Hofstra edged No. 6 seed Hartford 4-3 to earn its second straight conference title and NCAA Tournament berth.

Earning singles victories for the Blue Hens vs. Boston University were David Mouber at No. 1 singles, Lee Kennedy at No. 2, and John Fogelgren at No. 6.

The Hens earned the doubles point by winning two of the three matches. Mouber and Kennedy teamed for an 8-4 win over J.P. Debbink and John Koetzle at the No. 2 spot while Ari Zweig and Pat Seitz captured the No. 3 doubles match with an 8-6 win over Jason Vinoles and John Mofsky. Seitz and Zweig improved to 6-6 on the season with their fifth straight win.

Seitz, Zweig, and Fogelgren were each named to the America East All-Tournament team for their play during the weekend.
