Hartford Upsets Delaware 4-2 in Opening Round; Zweig Wins Twice for Hens

 

Freshman Ari Zweig Won Two Matches for the Hens

BURLINGTON, VT -- Sixth-seed University of Hartford earned the doubles point then won three singles matches to post a 4-2 opening round upset over No. 3 seed University of Delaware Friday evening at the America East Men's Tennis Tournament at the University of Vermont's Patrick Complex.

The Blue Hens, who suffered an opening round loss in the tournament for the second straight year, fell to 4-7 on the season and will take on No. 7 New Hampshire in Saturday's consolation round match at 6 p.m.

In other first round matches, No. 4 Vermont defeated No. 5 Boston University 4-1, top seed and defending champion Hofstra downed No. 8 Drexel 4-0, and No. 2 Towson upended New Hampshire 7-0. Semifinal action will begin Saturday at 12 noon with the final set for Sunday at 12 noon. The champion earns an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.

Delaware picked up just three victories on the day as Sanjay Khindri defeated Hartford's Rob Greece 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 4 singles spot and Ari Zweig (Wilde Lake/Columbia, MD) downed Tony Russo 6-1, 6-3 at the No. 5 spot and teamed with Pat Seitz for a 8-0 win over Russo and Chris Maglieri at No. 3 doubles.

Hartford picked up wins from Pedja Zdravkovic at No. 1 singles, Nemana Bala at No. 2 singles, Cristoffer Hartmann at No. 5 singles, and the doubles teams of Zdravkovic and Hartmann at No. 1 and Bala and George Rzepcki at No. 2.
