Kennedy is Lone Hen
Winner in 2001 Debut
COLLEGE PARK, MD -- University of Delaware sophomore
Lee Kennedy was the lone UD winner as the Blue Hen
men's tennis team opened its 2001 season with a 6-1 loss to
host University of Maryland Sunday afternoon.
The Terrapins won five of the six singles matches in
straight sets and swept the three doubles matchups to down
the Hens (1-0) in the first meeting between the two schools
on the tennis court since 1934.
Kennedy, a sophomore from Cornelius, NC (North
Mecklenburg HS) who posted a team-best record of 15-9
playing out of the No. 3 spot a year ago, was Delaware's
lone winner on the day as he bested Maryland's Jon Netter
6-2, 7-5 at the No. 2 singles position. Kennedy's 15 wins
last year was the second highest total ever for a Blue Hen
freshman.
Maryland got straight sets wins from Chris Chiu over Dave
Mouber at No. 1, Jon Murchis at No. 3 over Sanjay Khindri,
Luan Nguyen at No. 4 over Ari Zweig, Larry Chou at No. 5
over John Fogelgren, and Dan Kenshalo at No. 6. Kenshalo
needed a tie breaker to down Delaware's Pat Seitz 7-6 (7-5),
6-2 at the No. 6 spot.
The Blue Hens, who have three freshmen and two sophomores
in its top six, are coming off an 11-13 record last season
when they advanced to the America East quarterfinals under
