UMBC Downs Delaware, Kelly-Khindri Win at Doubles

 

Sanjay Khindri Won at No. 1 Doubles with Sean Kelly

NEWARK, DE -- The University of Maryland Baltimore County swept the University of Delaware in a men's and women's non-league tennis match Tuesday afternoon.

The UMBC men defeated Delaware 7-0 at the Delaware Field House courts while the Retriever women downed the Delaware women 4-3 at the Carpenter Sports Building Courts.

In the men's match, UMBC swept the six singles matches, winning five in straight sets as they received wins from Nick Misra, Mikhail Kovznetsov, Eric Nudo, Dimitri Bondar, Mark Carducci, and Vinny Granito. Granito needed three sets to down Blue Hen freshman John Fogelgren, 2-6, 6-2, 7-5. Fogelgren had his three-match win streak snapped.

Delaware (3-5) picked up its only win of the day at No. 1 doubles where the UD team of Sean Kelly and Sanjay Khindri defeated Nudo and Granito 8-3.

UMBC, a 2000 NCAA Tournament qualifier, edged the Delaware women (2-3) by a 4-3 score as the Retrievers split the six singles matches but won the doubles point as they won matches at the first and second doubles positions.

Picking up victories for the Blue Hens were Martine Street at No. 3, Danielle Wall at No. 5, and Jessica Quittman at No. 6. Delaware's No. 3 doubles team of Quittman and Anisha Talati won by default. Wall won her fourth straight match to improve to 4-0 on the season.

Both Delaware teams will continue action Friday when they host Hofstra at 3 p.m.
