Lewis, Mouber, Zweig Win in Singles in UD Loss

 

Dustin Lewis won at No. 4 singles for the Blue Hens

BETHLEHEM, PA -- Host Lehigh University swept a pair of hard-fought non-league tennis matches from the University of Delaware Saturday afternoon as the Mountain Hawks downed the Blue Hens 4-3 in both matches.

Lehigh handed the Delaware women their seventh straight loss with a 4-3 victory while the Mountain Hawk men downed Delaware by an identical 4-3 score.

The Delaware women (3-7) lost despite splitting the three singles matches. Lehigh picked up the extra point as it won two of the three doubles matches to down the Blue Hens for just the second time in the last eight matches between the two.

For the Blue Hens, Elly Giese (National Cathedral/Washington, DC) posted a 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 win over Erica Feinman at No. 1 singles, Anisha Talati (Hillsborough/Bellemead, NJ) downed Alison Kors, 6-4, 6-1 at No. 3 singles, and Christine Knox (William Penn/New Castle, DE) was a 6-2, 5-7, 6-2 winner over Meggan Dencker at No. 4 singles.

The Hens picked up their lone doubles win at the No. 2 spot as Talati teamed with Martine Street for an 8-4 victory. Giese improved to 8-6 on the season and posted her 48th career singles victory, moving into a tie for fifth place all-time at Delaware with Lisa Fry (1993-97). Talati improved to 8-6 on the season while Knox moved her record to 6-3 in singles.

In the men's match, Lehigh defeated the Blue Hens (6-4) for the fourth time in the last five matches. Delaware was playing its first match since March 9.

Delaware won three of the six singles matches as Dustin Lewis (Orange/Pepper Pike, OH) defeated Craig Ditman of Lehigh 6-2, 6-7, 6-1 at No. 4, Dave Mouber (Moorestown Friends/Mt. Laurel, NJ), upended Andrew Shapiro, 4-6, 6-4, 6-0 at No. 5, and Ari Zweig (Wilde Lake/Columbia, MD) posted a win over Brad Wimmer by a 6-3, 6-0 score at No. 6. Lewis (10-5) posted his team-leading 10th singles win of the season while Zweig ran his singles winning streak to three matches.

Both Delaware teams will return to action March 26 whey they travel to Colonial Athletic Association foe George Mason for a 3 p.m. match.
