UD Doubles Teams Advance to Finals; Zweig Wins Consolation Singles Title

 

NORFOLK, VA -- Two University of Delaware men's doubles teams advanced to the finals and Ari Zweig captured the Flight D singles consolation title at the East Coast Tennis Championships hosted by Old Dominion University this past weekend.

Delaware's Flight A doubles team of John Tully and Robert Wirth advanced to the finals with victories of 9-8 (5) over Luis Baraldi and Josef Novotny, a 9-8 win over Howard's Dwayne Pagon and Kenneth Brown, and an 8-6 win over Rylan Rizza and Stephen Rozek of Virginia. Adriana Mello and Izak van der Merwe of host Old Dominion defeated Tully and Wirth 8-3 in the finals.

In Flight D doubles, Delaware's team of Philip Wayne and Dustin Lewis advanced to the finals thanks to wins of 8-3 over Noah Himberger and Victor Ng of UMBC and a victory over John Tomasheski and Alex Underhill of Virginia Wesleyan. The University of Connecticut's Mike Louis and Alex Ningas downed Lewis and Wayne 8-1 in the finals.

Highlighting the action in singles for the Blue Hens was junior Ari Zweig who lost his first match in Flight D singles to Virginia's Kyle Hatten (6-3, 6-4) but battled back to win his next four matches and capture the consolation finals title. Along the way, Zweig defeated Jason Wood of Virginia Wesleyan, 8-3, Gabriel Costa of George Mason, 8-1, Ernesto Sorruco of Lees-McRae, 9-8, and John Tomasheski of Virginia Wesleyan, 8-4 in the finals.

Delaware will close out the fall season Oct. 25-28 at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Regionals at the University of Pennsylvania.
