Blue Hens Down Garnet for the First Time in School History

NEWARK, DE - The University of Delaware captured five of the six singles matches on the way to a 5-2 non-league men's tennis victory over Swarthmore College Sunday afternoon at the Delaware Field House Courts.

The Blue Hens (3-2) won each of the five singles matches in straight sets on the way to the victory, the first ever by Delaware over the NCAA Division III power Garnet in 38 all-time meetings. The two teams met for the first time since the 1966-67 season.

Picking up singles victories for the Blue Hens were sophomore John Tully (Pittsford Sutherland/Pittsford, NY) at No. 1, senior Lee Kennedy (North Mecklenburg, Cornelius, NC) at No. 2, junior Dustin Lewis (Orange/Pepper Pike, OH) at No. 3, freshman Josh Ditman at No. 5, and sophomore Robert Wirth (Saddlebrook Academy, FL/Sydney, Australia) at No. 6.

Delaware's only setback in singles came at the No. 2 spot where Swarthmore's Zach Rodd downed Sanjay Khindri 7-5, 6-3.

Swarthmore earned the doubles point as it won two of the three matches. Delaware captured its only doubles win at the No. 3 spot where Wirth and Lewis teamed for an 8-6 win over Matt Draper and Dave Gentry.

The Blue Hens will return to action Oct. 2 at home vs. Villanova.
