Three Blue Hen Singles Players, One Doubles Team Advance to Quarterfinals

NORFOLK, VA -- Stefanie Riddle advanced to the Flight D-1 singles semifinals and teamed with Julia Shapiro to advance to the Flight D doubles semifinals to lead University of Delaware players at the Old Point National Bank College Tennis Invitational this weekend at Old Dominion University.

Riddle defeated Natalie Hudson of Hofstra 6-0, 6-1 and Katie Zelenak of Mary Washington 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 before falling to Cristina Meilicke of East Carolina 6-3, 6-0 in the semifinals and then teamed with Shapiro for two wins before falling to Jackie Sy and Lauren Verrall of Temple 8-3 in the semifinals.

Delaware's other top finisher was Katie Rose, who lost her first match at Flight D singles but came back with wins of 8-4 over Connecticut's Christi Lazar, 8-0 over Lizbeth Hoyos of Norfolk State, and 8-5 over Virginia Wesleyan's Lisa Fanny before falling to Kerri Califano of Mary Washington 8-5 in the consolation finals.

On the men's side, the Hens had three singles players and one doubles team advance to the quarterfinals.

Dustin Lewis downed Alex Wright of Georgetown 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 and James Madison's Clint Morse 6-2, 6-3 before falling to Ryan Mills of Campbell 6-2, 6-3 in the Flight C quarterfinals; Philip Wayne downed Wes Lyon of Virginia Wesleyan 6-2, 6-0 and Chris Lyon of Virginia Wesleyan 6-3, 6-0 before falling to Artoym Starkov of Campbell 6-1, 7-5 in the Flight D quarterfinals; and Adam Freedenberg downed David Weiner of Christopher Newport 6-1, 6-2 and J.R. Gudger of East Carolina 6-4, 7-6 (5) before falling to Nick Rose of East Carolina 6-0, 6-2 in the Flight D quarterfinals.

Also advancing to the quarterfinals was the Flight D doubles team of Freedenberg and Adam Liebman who defeated a team from Christopher Newport before falling to East Carolina.

Delaware's No. 1 singles player, John Tully, extended his winning streak to 12 matches, the longest for UD player since the 1996-97 season, with a first round 7-6 (5), 4-6, 6-2 win over Longwood's Rashko Patnikov before falling to American's Guillaume Tarralle in the second round.
