Blue Hens Snap
Two-Match Losing Streak
FAIRFAX,
VA -- The University of Delaware won 14 of the 18
matches on the day and the Blue Hen men's and women's tennis
teams swept by host and Colonial Athletic Association foe
George Mason Saturday afternoon.
The Delaware men (10-10, 2-2 CAA) snapped
a two-match losing streak with a 6-1 win over the Patriots
while the Blue Hen women (8-9, 3-2 CAA) won their third
match in the last four outings with a 5-2 decision over
George Mason.
Both Blue Hen teams will close out the
regular season today (Sunday) by hosting Drexel. The men's
match will begin at 11 a.m. followed by the women's match at
2 p.m. The CAA Tournament will be held this weekend at
William & Mary.
In the men's match, Delaware won all
three doubles matches and captured five of the six singles
matches to post the easy victory. John Tully (at
right) improved to 16-8 this season and became just the 15th
player in school history to reach 40 career singles
victories with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Tim Bainton at the No. 2
spot. Adam Liebman, Josh Ditman, Ari
Zweig, and Philip Wayne also won singles matches
for the Hens with Wayne extending his winning streak to
three.
In doubles play, the Hens won the point
by taking all three matches. Sanjay Khindri and Tully
combined for a win at No. 1 for their 16th career victory,
Zweig and Ditman won at the No. 2 spot, and Wayne and Jon
Edwards were winners at the No. 3 spot.
On the women's side, George Mason won the
No. 1 and No. 2 singles competitions and the No. 1 doubles
match, but the Hens won all the other matches to post the
victory. Marissa Singer extended her winning streak
to three with a victory at No. 3 singles while Stefanie
Riddle improved to a team-best 13-7 this season with a
No. 6 singles victory. Jamie deGraffenreid and
Beth Principe also won their singles
matches.
The Hens took the doubles point as the
teams of Singer and Liz Perlow at No. 2 and Principe
and Julia Shapiro at No. 3 were both winners.
