Delaware Men Fall
in Last Match of the Day; Zweig, Wayne Double
Winners
NEWARK,
DE -- The University of Delaware women swept all nine
matches, including five singles wins in straight sets, to
post a 7-0 win over Hofstra and the Hofstra men edged the
Blue Hens by a 4-3 score in two Colonial Athletic
Association tennis matches Saturday at the Delaware Field
House Courts.
The Blue Hen women won their second
straight match to improve to 7-8 on the season (2-2 vs. CAA)
and defeated the Pride for the 10th straight time without a
loss. Hofstra fell to 2-9, 0-2 CAA with the
defeat.
On the men's side, Hofstra's Rodrigo
Teixeira downed Delaware's John Tully in three sets
at the No. 2 singles spot in the last match of the day to
clinch the 4-3 victory for the Pride, who improved to 10-4
(3-0 CAA) with their seventh straight win. The Blue Hens,
who swept the three doubles matches and won at No. 5 and No.
6 singles, fell to 9-9 (1-2 CAA) for the season.
The Delaware women swept through their
morning match as Sari Shuster at No. 1 singles,
Liz Perlow at No. 2, Marissa Singer at No. 3,
Beth Principe at No. 5, and Stefanie Riddle at
No. 6 all posted straight set wins. Delaware's No. 4
player, Jamie deGraffenreid, needed three sets to
down Hofstra's Jill Spiritus 2-6, 6-3, 6-3. Shuster (12-9)
and Riddle (12-6) each won their team-high 12th matches of
the season.
The Hens also won all three doubles
competitions with Shuster and deGraffenreid winning their
third straight match of the season at the No. 1 spot,
Principe and Katie Miller won at No. 2, and Perlow and
Singer were winners at the No. 3 spot.
On the men's side, the Delaware men
suffered a close defeat despite winning the doubles point
with three wins by identical 9-8 scores. Tully and Sanjay
Khindri won at No. 1, Josh Ditman and Ari
Zweig won at No. 2, and Jon Edwards and Philip
Wayne (at right) were winners at the No. 3 spot.
Zweig and Wayne were double winners for
the Hens as they captured Delaware's only two singles wins
of the afternoon. Zweig posted a 6-4, 1-6, 7-5 win over
Robert Sforzo at No. 5 and Wayne was a 6-1, 6-4 winner over
Mario Hluch at the No. 6 competition.
