Wayne Wins Two
Matches but Blue Hens Drop Close One to
UMBC
NEWARK,
DE -- The University of Delaware men's and women's
tennis teams each dropped a non-league decision to UMBC
Thursday afternoon at the Delaware Field House Courts.
UMBC, now a member of the America East
conference, advanced to the NCAA Tournament last season in
both men's and women's tennis as champions of the Northeast
Conference. Delaware fell to the UMBC men by a 4-3 score,
the Hen's second straight 4-3 setback, while the UD women
dropped a 6-1 decision to UMBC. The Retriever women improved
to 9-4 with their eighth straight victory.
The Delaware men fell to 9-10 with their
second straight setback while the Blue Hen women had a
two-match win streak snapped to fall to 7-9. Both Delaware
teams will resume Colonial Athletic Association action
Saturday at George Mason.
In the men's match, Delaware got singles
victories from Sanjay Khindri at the No. 2 spot,
Adam Liebman at No. 3, and Philip Wayne (at
right) at No. 6, and a doubles win at the No. 3 spot
from the team of Wayne and Jon Edwards. Khindri
improved to 12-11 on the season in singles, Liebman improved
to 11-11, and Wayne won his second straight match to move
his record to 6-4.
The Delaware women managed just one
victory on the day as Marissa Singer (at
right) posted a 6-0, 6-4 win over Idil Un at the No. 3
spot to win her second straight match and improve to 7-8 on
the season.
