Men Netters Open Florida Trip with 5-2 Win
over Bethune-Cookman

BEACH, FL -- The University of Delaware
men's and women's tennis teams opened
their annual spring break trip to Florida
with a split with host Bethune-Cookman
Monday afternoon as the Blue Hen men won
5-2 while the UD women dropped a 4-3
verdict.
The
Delaware men (6-2), playing for the first
time in a week due to two rainouts, won
their second straight match with the 5-2
win as the Blue Hens won two doubles
matches to earn the doubles point and won
four of the six singles
competitions.
On the
women's side, Delaware (10-2) had a
three-match win streak snapped as
Bethune-Cookman won the deciding point by
winning two of the three doubles matches.
The match was the 500th in UD history with
the Hens owning an all-time mark of
305-195 since 1973.
In the
men's match, Delaware picked up four
singles victories as Josh Ditman downed
Jerome Ward 5-7, 6-2, 6-4 at No. 3, Jesse
Carl downed Pablo Magro 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 at
No. 4, Robert Wirth was a 7-5, 6-4 victor
over Davion Lewis at No. 5, and Jason
Hanschman (right) posted a 6-0, 6-2 win
over Callen Ritcey at No. 6. Hanschman
(11-4) picked up his team-leading 11th
singles win of the season while Blue Hen
No. 1 player John Tully took a tough loss
as he fell to Thabani Sithole by a 7-6
(7-3), 7-6 (7-5) score.
In
doubles, the Hens won two out of three as
Jesse Carl and Hanschman (9-2) teamed for
an 8-3 win over Fernando Marcato and Ward
at No. 2 and Sammy Carl and Philip Wayne
(8-1) won 8-2 over Lewis and Terry Powell
at No. 3. The Hens are now 33-13 in
doubles play this season.
In the
women's match, Delaware picked up three
singles victories as Susan Pollack rallied
for an 0-6, 6-3, 6-0 win over Olga
Rvislova at the No. 1 spot, Brittany
Barsky won 6-3, 6-0 over Shaunda Gaiter at
No. 5, and Katie Miller won easily over
Sheliza Bhola at No. 6 by a 6-0, 6-0
score. The Hens' lone winner in doubles
came at No. 3 where Alexa Dragonette and
Julie Schiller won 8-0 over Gaiter and
Bhola. Pollack improved to 15-4 on the
season in singles while Barsky won her
fourth straight match to improve to
10-5.
Delaware
will continue action in Florida Tuesday
with matches vs. Webber International
College in Babson Park, FL.
