NEWARK, DE
-- The University of Delaware tennis teams
closed out their 2005 seasons Sunday
afternoon against Bucknell at the Delaware
Field House Tennis Courts with the Blue
Hen men posting a 4-3 victory and UD women
falling by a 5-2 score.
The
Delaware men snapped a two-match win
streak and won 12 dual matches for the
second straight year, finishing with a
12-7 mark. The Blue Hen women dropped
their third straight match to fall to 15-8
but finished with their highest win total
since going 15-5 in 1999-2000.
Josh
Ditman, Jesse Carl, and Jason Hanschmann
(right) all won singles matches for the
Delaware men while the Blue Hen tandems of
Tully and Robert Wirth at No. 1 and Jesse
Carl and Hanschmann at No. 2 also
contributed victories in doubles to win
the doubles point. Tully lost at No. 1
singles but finished his career with a
school-record 105 matches with his 57 wins
equalling the school record for singles
wins in a career set by Jon Zolin in
1971-75.
Hanschmann
finished the year with a record of 18-7,
leading the Blue Hens in wins and
establishing a school record for singles
wins in a season by a freshman. He then
teamed with Jesse Carl to post the doubles
win, improving to 17-5, the second highest
win total for a UD doubles team and the
most since Jeff Dumansky and Jeff Olmstead
went 18-3 in 1973-74.
On the
women's side, Delaware managed just three
victories on the day as Alexa Dragonette
posted a 6-4, 6-2 win over Chelsea Mills
at No. 4 singles, Katie Miller was a 6-1,
6-3 winner over Kaite Baffa at No. 6
singles, and Liz Perlow and Sari Shuster
were 8-4 winners over Baffa and Rheanna
Gaskin at No. 3 doubles.
Dragonette
finished the year with a record of 12-6,
Miller improved to 13-8, and Perlow and
Shuster improved to 8-1. Freshman Susan
Pollack (19-9) at No. 1 singles, Perlow
(19-11) at No. 2 singles, and Shuster
(19-10) at No. 3 singles all lost Sunday
but shared the team lead for wins. The 19
wins are the highest for a UD player since
Elly Giese won 24 matches in 1998-99.
Pollack's 19 wins are the second most ever
by a UD freshman in a season while Perlow
set a school record for singles matches
played in a season (30).
