Quarterfinals; Will Close Out Season

NEWPORT
NEWS, VA -- Both the University of
Delaware men's and women's tennis teams
were knocked out of the Colonial Athletic
Association Tournament Friday afternoon as
the Hens fell in the quarterfinals at
Huntington Park.
The No. 7
seed Delaware men dropped a 4-0 decision
to No. 2 seed William & Mary (9-14)
while the Blue Hen women, the No. 6 seed,
fell to No. 3 Old Dominion by a 4-1 score.
Both Delaware teams will close out their
2004-05 season Sunday when they host
Bucknell at the Delaware Field House
Tennis Courts at 1 p.m.
The
Delaware men (11-7) fell in the CAA
quarterfnals for the fourth straight year
as the Tribe captured two doubles matches
to earn the doubles point and also
captured the first three singles
matches.
William
& Mary's Jeff Kader, ranked No. 66 in
the nation in singles, defeated Delaware's
John Tully 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1, Colin
O'Brien was a 6-2, 6-0 winner over Adam
Liebman at No. 2, and Sean Kelleher
defeated Josh Ditman 6-2, 6-0 at the No.
3 spot. Delaware's Jesse Carl at No. 4,
Jason Hanschmann at No. 5, and Jonathan
Schwartz at No. 6 did not finish their
matches with the result was
decided.
In
doubles, the Tribe's No. 2 team of Alex
Cojanu and Kader defeated Delaware's Carl
and Hanschmann 8-2, snapping the Delaware
duo's win streak at six, and the No. 3
tandem of O'Brien and Alex Fish downed
Philip Wayne and Sammy Carl 8-2. The No. 1
match between Delaware's Tully and Robert
Wirth and Kelleher and Stephen Ward was
not completed with the doubles point was
decided.
The
Delaware women (15-7) fell in the CAA
quarterfinals to Old Dominion (11-14) for
the fourth straight year as the Monarchs
won two doubles matches to earn that point
and captured three of the four matches
that were completed. Delaware earned its
only two wins by default as Brittany
Barsky (16-8) won at No. 6 singles and Liz
Perlow and Sari Shuster (7-1) won at No. 3
doubles.
In singles
play, ODU's Kerstin Endlich defeated
Delaware's Susan Pollack 6-2, 6-1 at No.
1, Barbara Costa was a 6-2, 6-1 winner
over Perlow at No. 2, and Fernanda Luiz
was a 6-0, 6-0 winner over Sari Shuster at
No. 3. Delaware's Alexa Dragonette at No.
4 and Katie Miller at No. 5 did not finish
their matches when the result was
clinched.
In other
men's quarterfinal matches Friday, UNC
Wilmington defeated James Madison 4-2, top
seed and defending champion Virginia
Commonwealth downed Drexel 5-0, and Old
Dominion was a 4-0 winner over Hofstra.
Semifinal action will be held Saturday at
1 p.m. with the finals set for Sunday. The
winner will earn an automatic berth into
the NCAA Tournament.
On the
women's side, UNC Wilmington upended James
Madison 4-0, No. 1 seed and defending
champion William & Mary was a 4-0
winner over Drexel, and Virginia
Commonwealth downed George Mason 4-0.
Semifinal action will be held Saturday at
10:30 a.m.. with the finals set for
Sunday. The winner will earn an automatic
berth into the NCAA Tournament.
