DATE: April 10, 2005

HEMPSTEAD, NY -- The University of Delaware women's tennis team posted its eight shutout of the year with a 7-0 victory over Hofstra while the Blue Hen men were edged by a 4-3 margin against the Pride in a pair of Colonial Athletic Association tennis matches Sunday afternoon.

The Delaware women improved to 13-5 (2-1 CAA) as they won all three doubles matches to earn that point and then swept the six singles matches, winning each in straight sets. Hofstra fell to 3-11 with the loss.

On the mens' side, Delaware earned the doubles point but were defeated in four of the six singles matches to drop the 4-3 decision. The Blue Hens fell to 9-5 (1-2 CAA) with their second straight 4-3 loss while Hofstra improved to 7-5 with the victory.

The Delaware women remained undefeated all-time vs. Hofstra at 11-0 and the 13 wins mark the highest win total for the Blue Hen women since the 1999-2000 squad posted a 15-5 record and placed second at the America East championships. The Hofstra men downed Delaware for the third straight year and for the second straight time by a 4-3 margin.

In women's action, Delaware's Susan Pollack (18-7) posted a 6-0, 6-0 win over Barbara van der Woude at No. 1 singles, Liz Perlow (18-7) was a 6-2, 7-6 (9-7) winner over Erika Reggiani at No. 2, Sari Shuster (17-7) downed Jill Spiritus 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3, Alexa Dragonette downed Mayo Hosoda 6-4, 6-4 at No. 4, Katie Miller was a 6-4, 6-0 winner over Valerie McDonald at No. 5, and Brittany Barsky downed Jillian Schalk 6-2, 6-1 at No. 6. Pollack and Perlow each won their 18th singles matches of the season, the highest total for a UD player since Elly Giese won a school-record 24 matches in 1998-99.

In doubles, Pollack and Dragonette were 8-0 winners over van der Woude and Reggiani at No. 1, Miller and Barsky teamed for an 8-6 win over Spiritus and Hosoda at No. 2, and Perlow and Shuster won 8-6 over Schalk and McDonald at the No. 3 spot.

The Delaware men won two of the three doubles matches as Jesse Carl and Jason Hanschman (right) improved to 13-4 with an 8-4 win over Tal Alexander and Matt Schor at the No. 2 spot and the No. 3 team of Philip Wayne and Sammy Carl were 8-1 winners over Andy Cha and Rob Sforzo, improving to 14-1 with their 12th straight victory. The 14 wins is the third highest single season total in school history for a UD doubles team.

In singles, the Hens got wins from Josh Ditman (13-4) at the No. 3 spot and from Hanschman (16-5) at the No. 4 spot. Ditman posted a 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 win over Schor and Hanschman downed Cha 4-6, 6-0 (9-7). Hanschman's 16th win tied the school record for singles wins by a freshman set by Jeff Harrison in 1989-90 and by Steve Querner in 1978-79.
