Wirth Advance to Doubles Round of 16 at
ITA Northeast Regionals

BLACKSBURG,
VA -- The No. 1 University of Delaware
men's tennis doubles team of senior John
Tully and junior Robert Wirth won two
matches and advanced to the round of 16 to
highlight Blue Hen performances at the
Intercollegiate Tennis Association
Regional tournaments this past weekend.
Tully and
Wirth competed in doubles and Tully
competed in singles action at the ITA
Northeast Regional at Virginia Tech
University in Blacksburg, VA while
freshman Susan Pollack and sophomore Sari
Shuster competed in doubles and Pollack
competed in singles action at the women's
ITA East Regionals at the University of
Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.
Tully and
Wirth opened play Friday with an 8-3 first
round win over Hofstra's Jong Won Cha and
Luke Djordjevic and advanced to the round
of 16 with a second round 8-5 win over
Justin McConkey and Walter Garcia of
Niagara Saturday. The Delaware tandem was
eliminated Sunday with an 8-2 setback to
No. 8 seed Akshay Rao and Scott Robbin of
Columbia.
In singles
action, Tully opened play Friday with a
6-2, 4-6, 6-4 first round win over
Pennsylvania's Tas Tobias before falling
to No. 11 seed Mark Barry of Penn State by
a 6-4, 6-0 score in Saturday's second
round. Tully moved his season record to
9-3 and earned his 51st career victory to
move into a tie for second place all-time
at Delaware with Ken Dill (51-14 in
1978-82) and Ira Bernstein (51-19 in
1995-99).
At
Pennsylvania, Pollack fell to Virginia
Tech's J.J. Larson by a score of 6-2, 6-4
in the first round Saturday to fall to
11-2 on the season.
Pollack
and Shuster, the Hens' No. 1 doubles team,
dropped their opening round match to No. 4
seed Candice Fuchs and Megan Moulton-Levy
of William & Mary on Saturday by an
8-2 score. Pollack and Shuster fell to 7-2
on the season.
Delaware
concluded its fall season with the
tournaments and will return to action in
February to begin the spring championship
season.
