Edges Lafayette 4-3 for Men's Tennis

-- The University of Delaware men's and
women's tennis teams swept host Lafayette
in non-league tennis action Monday
afternoon at the Sullivan Tennis Courts.
The
Delaware women improved to 9-1 on the
season with a 5-1 victory over the
Leopards while the Blue Hen men improved
to 5-2 with the hard-fought 4-3 win over
Lafayette.
The
Lafayette women fell to 5-5 and the
Leopard men dropped to 10-5 on the season.
The match was originally scheduled for
Sunday but was postponed due to rain.
In the
men's match, the teams split the six
singles matches but the Blue Hens picked
up the doubles point by winning at the No.
2 and No. 3 doubles spot. Picking up
singles wins for the Hens were Josh Ditman
at No. 3, Jason Hanschman at No. 5, and
Jon Schwartz at No. 6. Hanschman picked up
his 10th win of the season with the
victory.
In doubles
play, Delaware's No. 2 team of Jesse Carl
and Hanschman posted an 8-4 win over Brett
Kraft and Jeremy Fehrs and at No. 3
doubles, the Hen tandem of Sammy Carl and
Philip Wayne downed Brett Warren and John
Zazzu by an 8-5 score. Carl and Wayne ran
their win streak to five matches and
improved to 7-1 on the year while Carl and
Hanschman improved to 8-2.
On the
women's side, Delaware captured five of
the six singles matches to post the
victory. The three doubles matches were
not contested because Delaware had already
clinched the overall victory.
Earning
singles wins for the Hens were Susan
Pollack at No. 1, Liz Perlow at No. 2,
Sari Shuster at No. 3, Alexis Dragonette
at No. 4, and Brittany Barsky at No. 5.
Delaware has now defeated the Leopards
five straight times since 2000.
Pollack
improved to 14-3 on the season while
Shuster moved to 13-3 and Perlow improved
to 15-2. The Hens are now 91-32 in singles
play as a team this season.
Both
Delaware teams continue action March 23
when the Blue Hens host Bucknell at the
Delaware Field House Tennis Courts.
